An update on my previous post. I took delivery of the pipe and have been very pleased with it. Going to be one of my favourites from now on.

This is so cool thank you!

Are there prescribed differences as to whether a pipe will get a 2/3/4 digit number?

I really appreciate the note on the bottom one mentioning that the first digit indicates the group size of the pipe! I have always wondered about that.

This is no longer mine. I just did not enjoy the Double Comfort stem.

It’s a Belvedere Freeform 4.

Cool find! Do you know when it was issued?
The pictures I have downloaded from the homepage of a Danish pipemaker
called Eric Andersen. I don’t know, where he got them. He put them online as a tribute to Charatan One of the Fotos shows 6 beautiful Straight Grains and another one of course the world’s most valuable pipe the Summa Cum Laude” carved by Reuben charatan.

Or do want to know in general, if there is a newer shape chart referring to the Dunhill-Russel-Dunhill eras?

@ Saintwilliam, Ken Barnes recently wrote something about a discussion that his father had with Barry Jones. The topic was the altering of he shape code to more numeric charakters, I recall. (I have to find the thread again). The first number indicates the size of the bowl, 1- 4 ok, but the last 3 digits ? ? The code system seems not to be logical or consistent. And further more, there are models which even have 5 numeric characters. On the other hand Charatan apparentl y also stamped shape codes, which were not listed in any shape chart. I have an old small smooth Zulu Special 160 with a tapered stem, but inall shape charts I have seen, the shape code for a Zulu is 1160, 260 or 67. And - as far as I know the “F.H” and “Made by Hand” stamped Charatans have no shape codes and are not listed in catalogues togerher with the “regular” pipes. Another confusing thing are the quality grades, because Herman Lane increases the number of the grades several rimes. so it may be e.g. that two Belvederes with the same shape b
number have in fact different qualities depending on the period they were made.

Here is an interesting “Charatan link”
to infos on shapes, quality grades and a price list from 1970

Hi Kottan, thank you for the link! Reuben was dead some years before the first Summa Cum Laude was carved in 1971.

I think you are right, jguss. Reuben died in 1962, so he couldn’t have carved the “summa Cum Laude”, and at that time Charatan’s make pipes were avaible in not that much quality grades until Hernan Lane introcuded more and more of them to puzzle the collectors. I mixed it up with the picture caption of this beauty, which was written by Tad Gage in his Lane/Charatan article 2003. ( ... carved by Reuben Charatan for Herman Lane).

CP-Gage - http://web.archive.org/web/20080517145923/http://www.pipeguy.com/cp-gage.htm

But also it can’t be manufactured in 1971 because it is already listed in the Charatan retail price list from 1970.

To keep the thread alive I will show off my 'new' pre-Lane (before 1955) Charatan DE LUXE 73 (Salisbury). My daughter was so kind to take some photos from this Oldie.
