A lot of good jobs involved in designing, building and operating spacecraft. The money doesn’t simply disappear into a hole.
On the government side of it, I wouldn’t be surprised if at least some of it wasn’t disappearing into a hole, but with privatization, I think you certainly have a valid point.

Think what a different world it is since the U.S. last launched its own payload. Or for that matter, since the early space program when, I do believe, some of the calculations were still being done with slide rules, incredible ingenious devices that now join the abacus as retro miracles. This should bring home a lot of technology that ends up in our pockets, etc. Keep those guys safe! No more Michelin Man space suits!

They were. And the computers on board the Apollo missions were less powerful than a common pocket calculator.
I had an older buddy that used to be an industrial chemist and a bit of an engineer. He showed me once how to use a slide rule. I’ve since forgotten how to do it, but it was neat to see someone calculate logarithms, etc, quickly without a calculator.
