San Marcos, TX Loses A Friend

I would guess that this belongs here. Rob Robinson, the proprietor of the Hill Country Humidor (the only tobacconist between Austin and San Antonio)passed away on March 2. He was quick with a story, had a shop open to all where pipes, cigars, and a good guitar were always welcome and in...

Any Pipe Shop in Austin, TX?

Pipeworld on Anderson is a good recommendation. It's difficult to find a good tobacconist in the area. hill country Humidor in San Marcos is a good bet. Rob, the owner, uses Stokkebyes for his blends, and usually has an eclectic selection of tins. I've searched around San Antonio (yes, pipe...

My first flake, and my first step into a larger world...

Well, sir... you've opened a very large box, full to the brim with choices. Define what you like, then take it from there. Flakes are Virginias, they're Balkans, they're Burleys, they're in-betweens and everything else. Enjoy what you smoke. Still, if I may... give the Samuel Gawith or Gawith...

Almost time for new tobacco -- help?

Dude... go for the PA. It's really a good, clean-smoking, great tasting burley. It's not fancy, but it doesn't claim to be, either. Mixture 79 does not give the licorice experience you might want, at least not in my opinion. Neither does Half & Half, for that matter. To me, they're fairly...

Almost time for new tobacco -- help?

Hmm... OK, yoru, let's see: C&D - Epiphany is an excellent choice for a mild-medium Latakia blend, but I found Billy Budd to be a bit too heavy for my tastes (and I do enjoy a good cigar now and then) G&H: I wish I could help you cut back there, however, with the exception of Sweet Whiskey...

    Favorite English...

Just one...? Tough call, but I'll go with Pipework and Wilkes No. 524. It's always very smooth, fragrant, tasty, just a wonderful, full-bodied smokey-sweet creation. If that wasn't available, though, I'd go with Black House. There's a huge Latakia blend for ya!

If You Like Cornell & Diehl and Facebook ...

I was really hoping to hear more about that dog's kidney stone... ahh, well... thanks for the link, Kevin. I will hie myself on over to Facebook. I like my C&D tobaccos, so if I can help give some support, most cool.

    PENZANCE

I tempered my greed and ordered just half a pound of sweet, sweet Penzance from pipesandcigars. Of course, I also ordered a pound of FVF, so maybe I'm not as considerate as I had hoped I might be for the holiday season...

    Your absolute worst all-time smoke

OTD claims the (dubious) prize! PM sent, received and replied. I am certain our arrangement will be mutually agreeable. Thanks!

    Two Friends English Chocolate

Novelist, I also got mine off of smokingpipes, delivered just last week, and I thought the price was right for Two Friends. It's excellent stuff; the chocolate sneaks up on you, and has a very pleasant taste and aroma. I haven't tried PS Nougat, but I am kind of fond of their cherry, so I'm...

    Your absolute worst all-time smoke

Oh, my... though I'll second the Borkum Riff, probably the most disagreeable smoke I've had has been G&H Dark Birdseye. It was a soul-retching experience. I have maybe 250g that's been sitting around in a Mason jar for the past five years. It's up for grabs; just let me know, and it's yours.

    Tobacco from the past

I've recently been on an OTC mini-binge, and picked up a tub of PA, same of CH, and one more tub: Granger. They have definitely opened my eyes to a tremendous smoking experience. I will say that of the three (and I think they're all good), Granger has been the tobacco I've enjoyed most. I have...

    Angler's Dream

I figured I'd wait on this before adding my two cents. Russ was kind enough to send a sample, so I smoked it all in order to give Angler's a good go. I smoked it indoors and out, in every type of pipe I have. I like it, but with some notes: this blend sparkled, for me at least, in a clay...

    Prince Albert is Sublime!

YAY! My color changed! I get to be a junior member. Does that mean I get to be the goofy sidekick that always has to be rescued? I'm looking forward to that, and my new job as cub reporter for the Daily Planet. I never thought I'd enjoy PA. I can't end my day without it, now. It's such a...

    Cob pipes: The why's

I have a dozen and a half cobs to go along with the briars, clays, meerschaums and McQueens I have haunting my office. I could go for more than two months without coming back to the same pipe. Yet, yet... I always seem to have a cob going. Enthusiastic second to the statement that OTC blends...
