Does Pipe Shape Effect How It Smokes?

Smoking involves two physical processes, combustion and distillation. When you light your pipe, hot gases are produced (combustion) which, when you draw them through the tobacco in the bowl, vaporize volatile, aromatic chemicals in the tobacco (distillation). These are then drawn through the...

    Jar fog.

Mostly likely it means that the temperature of the tobacco has increased since you jarred it and some of the moisture has vaporized and then condensed on the walls of the jar. Cellar your tobacco in a cool place and you won't see this.

Got My First Cob and Have Two Questions

I think the best blends to smoke in cobs are straight Virginias and VaPers. Burley-based blends are also good in cobs. English blends, not so much.

Rotten Tobacco? White Layer Growing Over Rope After 3 Weeks (Pic)

I think that falls under the category of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face, but be my guest. Let us know what it tastes like.

Does Zippo screw up the flavor?

Don't apologize for being new to the "hobby." You're observations are as valid as mine and everybody else's.

Does Zippo screw up the flavor?

@jason64 Zippo lighter fluid is both volatile and flammable, so any that doesn't burn when you are lighting your pipe quickly dissipates. I occasionally get a brief whiff of it but have never tasted is when using my Zippo. But all that matters is what you think. If you don't like the taste of...

The Emperor's New Clothes, Musings of a New Pipe Smoker

True. But this is also the case with the food we eat -- most of the "taste" comes from the aroma of the food. Our tastes buds can only detect sweet, salty, sour and bitter. By comparison, we can detect about 10,000 different smells. The amazing range of tastes that we experience is the result...

    Does alcohol facilitate tongue bite?

@mtwaller I experience the same thing. I think it's caused by the carbonation in the beer because I sometimes get the same tingling if I drink a soda while smoking. Again, same with me.

Can I use this solution for cleaning of the shank?

Rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol works just as well as Everclear and is a lot cheaper. It evaporates quickly and leaves mo taste or aroma in the pipe. You can use it to clean the inside of shanks and stems, but be careful not to let it get on the outside of your pipe because it can ruin the finish...

    Charcoal

I bought some activated charcoal once, but it just sat there and didn't do anything, so I returned it and got my money back.

    Lighter vs matches

Sorry for being a wet blanket but, IMO, pipe smokers who spend time worrying about whether to use a match or a lighter need to find a hobby.

Can You Smoke Pipe Tobacco From a Cheroot Pipe.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who smokes cigars in a pipe. They taste so much better.

    Jar - Jar - Jar - Jar - Jar

There is nothing on the FDA website about Ball jars, so I'd say that's a false rumor.

Things You Hate About Pipe Smoking

I don't like the fact that smoking a pipe is bad for my health. I wish it were a harmless pleasure but, let's be honest, it's not. I try to minimize the risk by limiting myself to one bowl a day and not inhaling, but I know that there is still a risk. As much as I enjoy pipe smoking, I'm glad...
