    1800’s

Yes the receptacle (cap) at the bottom is to capture fluid. A cavalier is drilled straight into the bowl with a second angled borehole down to the receptacle.

    1800’s

Can you post a picture please? Until now the only ones I know are the Comoy’s shape and a Sommer, Paris Oom Poul I have. Recently an early BBB Oom Poul was sold on eBay which looked totally different again. Mark

    1800’s

For me it is not the history per se, but rather the style. Here is a selection of old BBBs from the beginning of the 20th century. Each is different, and all differ from any modern pipe I have ever seen. 1900 Cavalier with horn stem, bone tenon and horn receptacle at the bottom. Poker with...

    Former Cig Smokers and Pipes

I became addicted to cigarettes 60 years ago, when I was 15, and was a chain smoker for most of the time since then. At the age of 27, I tried to stop and switched to a pipe. I smoked pipes only for 6 months and enjoyed it. But one cigarette and I was hooked again. I fought against it for 4 1/2...

    Show Off Your Barlings Here

Here is one more Barling motor cap. But it is on a Peterson Patent from 1903. There are no hallmarks on the motor cap but it does have the E.B. And W.B. Stamp. Jesse has pointed out to me that the motor cap was first made in 1906. so either the Pete was sold later, which did happen, or the cap...

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

Hi Jesse This has the same RE number as the 1906 Barling shown in the Pipedia Barling page. If it has British hallmarks that should tell the tale. However, according to the Peterson book, the hall marked silver bands were sometimes used after the stamping because the stamping was done in lots by...

Good to hear. I don’t follow Patent Peterson’s so wasn’t sure what it was worth. mark

Interesting Completed Ebay Auctions - British Pipes

Is it a PeteBar? What about a BarPete? All suggestions for other names are welcome. What seems clear is that it is a top grade K&P from 1903 with what looks very much like a period replacement stem because somebody other than me also disliked the P-lip. Or maybe they chewed through it. But was...

Sommer Grand Luxe with Two Stars???

Hi I've got two Sommer Grande Luxe bents labelled with 4 stars. Both are good smoking pipes and well made. I'm guessing from the style that they are possibly 1930s in origin but don't have any evidence for that except the style. Sommer was best known at the beginning of the 20th century for...

    1899 Hallmarked Meer Pre-Colored?

Hi, on old Meerschaums there was also an alternative in which the pipes were evenly coloured called Goudron. This is French for tar. Apparently the pipes were coated with an oil/tar mixture. They tend to be very evenly brown/red and glossy. Orlik made a number of them at the beginning of the...
