If you're only referring to buildup, damp, resilient paper towel folded 3-4 times. I use Grainger towels.

The dents still have gunk in them, though ^^^^
Nice try but they don't.
After 7 years in a storage bin. No oxidation return and pipe's contrast stain extends to its rim.

Grainger towels do they taste the same as the tobacco?
I’ve had good luck with Carbon Off and a Fingernail Brush under warm water. I “rejuvenate” the wood with brebbia bowl polish. This is on deep plateaus.
Very heavy grade industrial paper towels that can be washed in a machine. Never smoked the tobacco.
I think I might have tried granger once a long time ago but not sure. Interesting about the paper towels. Sounds more towel then paper.
I use Kramer’s Best Antique Improver or Murphy’s Oil Soap applied with a soft toot brush with decent success. Both are safe for wood. I have not tried Carbon-Off! some recommended here because it is labeled for metal only.
I spit on Q-tips and go to town. Sometimes it takes 20-30 but it works for me.
Personally I don't see the problem. A little build up around a textured or plateau rim just gives the pipe character. If you feel you must clean it try this. I once took an old brush head from my Sonicare and with a little water brushed the pipe for a while. It took off all the build up around the rim.
