The man on the right dropping his pipe.
I find it interesting that cigars and cigarettes have been removed from a lot of kids books but you'll still catch a pipe here or there. I find it interesting though that people usually react to a pipe as something interesting and more like a hobby then an addiction.Thought you guys might get a kick out of this... I know I do! I love the 50s Vibe of the art, the story is actually pretty good, and its my sons favorite book. The fact that he incorporated a pipe in one of the pictures makes me wonder if he's a pipe smoker? I will pick up a few more of his books to see if he captures the same Vibe and possibly more pipes.
You might be right. But I think it's a tobacco pipe and the other elements seem so bluntly on point that if it they wanted to show something else they would have shown that. And a lot of hippie types view tobacco smoking as part of the shamanic traditions so.... I say it's a tobacco pipe but also that's not the only thing running through that mans bloodstream either.Given the other elements in the piece, I doubt it's a tobacco pipe![]()
according to my former neighbors I've been both these fellows.Sunday Gardening, John Philip Falter, 1961.

Seeing what's in his backpack, perhaps he's smoking "Shortcut to Mushrooms"?You might be right. I actually really like this art piece a lot. I wonder if he or she made prints of the original to sell?Seems pipes aren't only relegated to works by artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.
My daughter-in-law spotted this at a local art walk.View attachment 413078
You could have the original for $1995.00I actually really like this art piece a lot. I wonder if he or she made prints of the original to sell?

A delightful detail is his frame of reference for self-portraits in the top-right corner: Dürer, Rembrandt, Picasso (a bust of a woman and a self-portrait), and van Gogh. One of my favorites:
