Grog originally referred to rum, which was the favoured tot of seafarers
my late father used to drink so called whiskey grogs, by trade he was a sailor,
The word grog came via Admiral Vernon of the British navy. He wore a thick coat at sea made of grogram (originally gros graine in French) and his men nicknamed him Old Grog. In 1740, Vernon ordered the daily rum ration for British Sailors to be watered down, and the new mixture became known as grog, named for its enforcer.

Note, the daily rum ration was 8oz, or a half-pint of 54% (108 proof) or higher rum. Watering it down was a merciful act.
