Bought this in December. Its my first meerschaum. The whole thing is coloring at the same speed. This is 50 bowls or so. I bought a second one and its def not doing this. View attachment 393138

What do you mean by "get lucky" here?

I think shape plays a role in how a pipe colors (especially where the colors seem to 'gather') but the block of meerschaum itself will be the largest determining factor.

That IMP is coloring quite nicely, you can start to see some freckling already too.

I meant did I get lucky with how quickly and uniformly its coloring. I have a billiard I've been smoking the hell out of and its not coloring like the one I posted. After looking at many meers like watching "Bremen Pipe Smoker" on youtube it seems pretty uncommon to get one that colors like this.

All depends on the block, and the tobacco even, in my opinion.

Thats what I love about meers, Is that they all colour differently.

This is my only meer. I have about 20 bowls through this one, and it's developing a funky "mottled" colour to it. I love it!

Such a great looking pipe. That replacement stem really transformed it in my opinion. I wish it were possible to get that sort of quality direct from the maker.
Altinay makes some reasonably decent stems. The hard plastic type but they're made well, fit well and are comfortable to clench. Unfortunately, most Meers come with a really mediocre stem at best. Thanks the compliment on the pipe, it's definitely one of my favorite pipes, Meer or otherwise.

I just noticed a mod changed the thread title from "mere" to "meer", removing the foundation of my (admittedly lame) joke response attempt.

So, anyone wondering what was up with all those pics, there you go.

Not true. Meers will ghost just like Briar. Smoke half a dozen bowls of some Gawith blend with Lakeland essence and then tell me it didn't ghost.
The only aromatic I smoke is S.G cherry cavendish and have yet to have it ghost. I have also been using sandpaper to keep zero cake in the bowl so idk.

Don't be that aggressive - just "ream" with a paper towel, you want a thin coating of carbon - kinda like a wok...

It's the residues seeping into the pores. Of course it ghosts. Perhaps your palate isn't all that well developed. How long have you been smoking a pipe? Bowls per day?
Meers are literal sponges lol. I always wondered how people don't notice it.

3 years. sometimes 5 a day. just depends. It might be I switch tobaccos from bowl to bowl. I smoked a bowl of S.G cavendish today, let the pipe cool, cleaned it, and did not pick up any ghosting. I also smoke english in them. I have not smoked a bunch of bowls of aromatic tobacco in a row though. Maybe my palates not developed. I believe you guys though, if I smoke a bunch of a aro out of it I'll have a problem lol.

I was using a microfiber towel to clean them after every smoke but cake just kept building up. Guess I might need to invest in a nice knife or something. I've heard you can water flush them too. Not really sure. Lots of conflicting info on the web.
