Open chat for the site?

Has there ever been or could there be an open chat for the site, an online Smoking Room, per se?

I realize open chat rooms are often an administrative burden, I've seen some that require a full-time referee, but it would be interesting to communicate with many of you in real time. More or less...

I think both of these would be pretty cool, especially the Zoom. However, it'd all depend on how many participants there were at any given time. Just a handful would be nice and cozy, but imagine the cacophonous din of 50 pipe smokers all giving their two cents on Dorchester vs. Dunbar simultaneously!

I think it is doable. I can set up a zoom meeting and create a thread to see who is interested and work out the specifics with those who are interested. What days would you think would be better?

Many years ago I used and moderated a few IRC rooms. It was the most convenient tool for the random drop ins and the forever idlers alike. I have still never found anything as simple, yet effective.

I have never been able to get into modern platforms if it’s not related to work.

I would be interested in giving it a try. I don’t have a “better day”. My schedule is always changing.

It would be cool to put voices and faces with the avatars...not to mention people's accents! You can only get so much though text. Lot of times the tone and sarcasm can be easily lost in translation. It would be like a smoking lounge to shoot the shit while smoking a pipe/cigar...but with people you kinda know, instead of complete strangers.

The only downside I see, (if it even is a downside) is you can only have 1 conversation going at a time, so might be best to limit them to maybe 10 or so people? But who knows, I'm just thinking on the fly here.

I agree. I think a limit is desirable for that very reason. It might work by admitting the first ten smokers. i am sure even then one would see a change up in the participants.

I think this would be a great idea. I forsee a lot of complications connecting it directly to the forum.
