I'm very happy with the results so far. I thought some might be the wax yellowing. It had a thick coat to begin with that got tacky once the bowl heated up. I've been buffing it out with a soft cloth at that point and its stopped being tacky.

No coloring bowl but I am using a Meer filter that came with it. Don't think that is affecting the color, but it could be.?
I believe that the carbon buildup on the inside of the bowl is what prevents the upper section from colouring like the shank.

my meer is a translucent meerschaum. And yeah it colors in all neat and stuff in visible layers. Basically it's a quality that happens sometimes and some people want it bad enough to pay more. Kind of like what happened with straight grained pipes which used to also not cost more.

probably. But the thing is pretty much everything works that way. Someone realizes people want to buy it and it becomes a special commodity. Until forums like this showed up people probably never realized that quality had special demand.Soon there will be straight VEINED meers!
Alright it might take a while and I haven't gotten pics that I am happy with yet. You can kind of see what it's doing but it still takes 40% imagination and 10% explanation.
No mine look dirtier in real life, and less colored in pictures.....
I found out the hard way, years later, standing outside when its overcast will produce the pictures that show the best color.
Yes it drops into the bottom and fits rather snuggly. I wasn't sure if it served any purpose other than, during the draw test and the first few puffs, keeping any tongue tinglers from pulling through. Now that I've experimented, I've found that using it allows every smoke down to white ash with little effort.
Nailed it again. It's all @cshubhra 's fault. It's the coolest and best smoking pipe I own and I haven't cleaned it in 7 straight smokes thanks to @didimauw and @Chasing Embers.
