On November 19, 1799, Independent Royal Arch Lodge 2 of Free and Accepted Masons, meeting at 87 Nassau Street in Manhattan, banned the smoking of cigars “under any pretense whatever” in lodge.

No mention of pipes!

This lodge remains very much at labor, and will reach its 261st anniversary this December despite the smoking ban.

I was once given a very nice cigar at the outfit next door to the New York Arts Club, The Player's Club, that was having some kind of reception, and I'm so glad that they were taking that attitude there on Gramercy Park. I even spent the night in the Arts Club through some good connections -- they're not generally providing lodgings. But the Masons have their own take, keeping up with the times as it were. No cigars from them.

I think Shriners are a part of masonic order. I wasn't a member, but played bagpipes with them when I was in high school. Smoking was allowed and they had that old cigarette dispenser machine, and beer in icebox. Definitely better than ice cream store.

I've always regarded Masonic lodges as curious backwaters whose purpose I would never know. Though I still don't know, I am glad to read that one such lodge has been doing whatever it is that they do for 261 years. That's a lot of doing over a very long time and in that longevity there probably lives a good purpose.

I'll support that even though I don't know what I'm supporting.
