  • Hi Brian,
I’m glad you had such a good time at the West Coast Pipe Show.
I do not know Charl Goussard, nor his pipes. It seems his path to pipe smoking is the same as most of us; cheap pipe, cherry tobacco. He seems to be more oriented towards the classical shapes of pipes. Do you know if he attends the Chicago show? It is interesting to hear about the pipe scene in different countries.
Rascal Flats – Life is a Highway is a traveling song. I don’t know if they smoke pipes. The quality of the music reproduction seems to have improved. Do you have more bandwidth or what?
Rant – Microsoft is well known for its customer service (sarcasm). Bounce, Bounce, Bounce – standard American Business practice. I-things are similar to MS
Your new location sounds great. Keep up the good work.

  • Nice Show brian!! Just want to make a note about “perique” being originally a name for the male parts down below. In Brazil, the Tupi(Too-pee’)people (Native Indians)call it “piroka”(Pee-raw’-ka), which is pretty close to ‘perique’. The meaning of the name in Tupi is ‘bald’ ‘bare’ as in bald head. I don’t believe this to be a coincidence. (my 2 cents)

  • The report on the Vegas Pipe Show was really interesting and enjoyable. I really appreciate the detail that pretty much covered the whole show.
The interview seemed somewhat stilted as if you and Charl just couldn’t find a wavelength that worked for both of you. I think one of the problems in interviewing someone from another continent is balancing the natural desire to discuss the culture of his country while still covering the pipe topics. I did go to Charl’s website to look around and he does have some nice pipes at prices running from $150 to $300.
The music was fine but that surely wasn’t country music. Well maybe it was because it seems like anything in which you can actually understand the lyrics gets lumped into the country music category. I can tell you that “Old Hank wouldn’t have done it that way”.
Yeah, Microsoft is not easy to deal with. They are so big that training their people to deal with individuals is a difficult deal. And if you don’t like them wait until you confront the Imperial Oligarchy of St. Jobs and his much higher price points.

  • Charl Goussard is a friend and he makes some wonderful pipes! I am the proud owner of five of his pipes as of now. Charl is getting quite a following nowadays. His pipes all smoke like machines and they are very well made. He is also very generous! He gifted me a wonderful pipe a while back and it is one of my finest smokers. Wide open draw and very deep bowl………
Buy some of his pipes now before his prices shoot through the roof as he becomes more popular!!! HA HA HA HA!!!!!
    GOOD SHOW CHARL!!!!

  • I am fortunate enough to have two Goussard pipes and they are both excellent smokers and favorites in my rotation. Charl is a great guy and a gifted pipe carver, and your interview of him made me feel both excited for him that others would learn of his skill yet disappointed now that my well kept secret is out and others will now know about this skilled craftsman from South Africa!
Cheers and keep up the great show!
    Scott

  • FYI. “Life Is a Highway” is a song written by Tom Cochrane, from his 1991 album Mad Mad World. The song was Cochrane’s most famous song and remains a favorite of mine. The RF version is more upbeat, but I like Tom’s original.
I don’t consider it a country song either, as it was a rock genre song first.
