The pouch aroma of this blend is a very nice Virginia sweet and tangy smell. The moisture level of this is, as with every C&D blend that I have tried, perfect for smoking right away. This blend is a broken flake (Fig. 1), so I lightly rubbed it out leaving it a little chunky (Fig. 2). I loaded the pipe using my two step method and packed it loosely.

This is a blend that I have smoked in both the tinned and bulk versions. Both of them are exactly the same. The moisture content is perfect for smoking right out of the tin or pouch. The tin aroma is very nice. There is a nice sweet real vanilla smell and I think I picked up on a hint of chocolate as well. I do not pick up on any honeydew in the aroma. What I mean by a real vanilla smell is; the vanilla is like vanilla bean or a high quality vanilla extract, not a chemical vanilla smell that is associated with the cheaper tobacco blends.

Note: This review is from bulk tobacco. I have not tried the tinned version, so I can not compare the differences, if any, between the two.
The tin aroma of this blend is very intriguing and pleasant. I am picking up on the rum, licorice, and vanilla as well as the sweet tang from the Virginias. It is a little on the moist side and could use a little drying time. This tobacco comes in a broken flake style (Fig. 1), and needs very little effort in rubbing out (Fig. 2).

Editors Note: This tobacco is from an sample pouch that I received from Mac Baren at the time this blend was introduced. It is has about 2 years of age on it. HH Vintage Syrian is not available in this pouch.
The pouch aroma on this blend has a sweet and tangy Virginia smell which was accompanied by the smokiness from the Latakia. The moisture content is perfect for smoking right out of the pouch. It is a coarse cut, which means there are some nice chunky pieces of tobacco. I loaded my pipe and proceeded with the charring light.

This is another blend from Samuel Gawith that is offered in both tin and bulk. However, I have not smoked this blend from the tinned version, only the bulk. So I can not comment on the differences in the two. But if it is anything like the other SG offerings, there is probably little or no difference between the two.
The tin aroma is a strong but sweet tobacco smell with a little smokiness mixed in and a tang in the nose. The moisture level is a little on the high side and letting it dry a little wouldn’t hurt. I prepared the flakes (Fig.1) by folding them in half and fully rubbing them out (Fig. 2). I loaded the pipe with a gravity fill and, using very light pressure, pushed the tobacco down in the bowl with my thumb to level it off.

The pouch aroma has that lovely sweet and tart smell that accompanies a lot of VA/PER blends. I love this smell. The moisture content is perfect for smoking without any drying time. The tobacco is a little chunky and I rubbed it out a little.
I used a two step packing method to load the bowl and proceeded with the charring light. I was greeted by a very nice sweet tobacco taste. I finished lighting the bowl and settled in for the smoke. There is a pure tobacco taste with a natural sweetness. At the mid-bowl point, this seems more of a VA blend to me than a VA/PER blend.

The pouch aroma was of a straight forward tobacco with that Virginia tang and a little bit of sweetness as well. It has a very nice smell. The moisture level was perfect for smoking right away with no drying time needed.
The cut was a little bit chunky, as you can see in Fig.1, so I broke it up and rubbed it out a bit. I used a 2 step packing method and loaded up the bowl. I performed the charring light and got a very nice sweet Virginia taste and aroma. I settled in for the smoke. Read the rest of this entry »

Upon opening the pouch, I was quite surprised. I was expecting a straight burley tobacco with no aroma other than a tobacco smell. It had an aroma, which to me, smelled like wine. It was not a bad thing, just unexpected. Actually, it was quite pleasant and I kind of like it. The moisture level was perfect right out of the pouch and required no drying time at all before smoking. Read the rest of this entry »

When I opened this tin I was greeted by a strong yet nice sweet aroma of Amaretto. I also picked up some slight hints of chocolate, caramel, and vanilla. The moisture level was a little on the moist side, as it is with most aromatics. And just like with most aromatics, I would suggest some drying time for the tobacco. Read the rest of this entry »

I have smoked this blend in both tinned and bulk. The tobacco in the tin contains a little more moisture and that is where the differences end. I can detect no difference in flavor, aroma, or any other qualities from either the tinned or bulk. The tin aroma is a straight forward Virginia tobacco aroma. It is accompanied by that tangy Virginia smell that I find really appealing with a very slight sweetness far in the background. Read the rest of this entry »
