The tin aroma of this blend is a strong, sweet and smoky tobacco smell with a light hint of spice to it. It smells very good. The moisture content is good for smoking right out of the tin, but some drying time would not hurt. I loaded up the pipe and proceeded to the charring light.
On the charring light:
Flavor: I tasted a nice smoky and sweet tobacco flavor.
Aroma: The aroma was a nice smoky tobacco smell with a hint of sweetness.
I finished lighting the pipe and settled in for the smoke.
At the beginning of the smoke, I taste a nice smoky tobacco taste with a bit of sweetness to it. I am also picking up on some slight hints of a pleasant BBQ flavor. It is a cross between BBQ sauce and BBQ meat, but is closer to sauce. The BBQ flavor is not a steady flavor. It will pop in and by the time you realize that it is there, it is gone. Around the 3/4 point, I start to taste some hints of black coffee; like the BBQ flavor, it is a fleeting taste that comes and goes.
At the mid-bowl point, I do not taste any more of the black coffee hints. I do still continue to taste the smoky and sweet tobacco taste, which, by the way, never left. I am starting to pick up on hints of a BBQ flavor again, but they are much more subdued than when I tasted them earlier. At about the last 1/4 point, the flavor profile of the mid-bowl point is still there, but I am starting to feel a little bit of a spicy feeling in my mouth. It is definitely not tongue bite, it is just a spicy feeling. It is also more of a feeling than a flavor.
This is a really good blend and I like it a lot. It smokes cool, dry, and didn’t bite. It has a complex and tasty flavor profile that keeps the smoke interesting from start to finish and it builds in strength as the bowl progresses. At the beginning it was more of a medium range and by the end of the bowl it was more on the full side. If you enjoy Latakia/English blends, I think that you will really enjoy My Mixture 965.
I Highly Recommend it!

I’ve been smoking this one for a few months now myself and think it is great.
It is definitely a high quality medium to full body English blend with a perfect mix between smokiness and sweetness.

I’ve always gotten that “barbecue” thingy when I smoked 965… but, not so much with that made by Altadis. Another really good tobacco in this genre would be Arcadia in McClelland’s 221-B Series. Kinda has a “ketchupy” vibe in it’s complexity.. which I found pleasant. I don’t care for a steady diet of it.. but, it’s enjoyable every now and again

I’ve been a pipe smoker for 50 years. Early on in that half century, I encountered Dunhill My Mixture No. 965. Since then I’ve regarded it as the definitive English mixture and the one pipe tobacco I would smoke if restricted to only one. After it was no longer blended by Dunhill, it seemed to me that it lost some quality, particularly in the last version which reached the US before it became unavailable. When it recently became available again, this time made by another, not Dunhill, company I expected the worst. It was such a pleasure to find that the present version seems to smoke and taste like the original, as far as I can tell many years after I last smoked Dunhill blended 965. What a completely unexpected and pleasant surprise! I guess the moral of this story is that one good thing about being a pessimist is: expecting the worst, we more frequently experience pleasant surprises than do the optimists.

Thanks for the review Bob. This is the second time I’ve heard of a tobacco throwing hints of BBQ flavor, whether saucy or like charred meat. I’m also generally pleased to hear that this modern incarnation more closely resembles the original blend. I don’t smoke Latakia-forward blends anymore, but if 965’s quality is characteristic of the entire product line, then there are some good smokes awaiting all of us.

This is my regular tobacco and it is awesome stuff. It is not as mild as the EMP and doesn’t kick the top of your head off like Nightcap… a lovely inbetween.
This blend can be smoked all day, any day and is a fantastic all-rounder.
