The Pipes Magazine Radio Show – Episode 128

Kevin Godbee
Thank you for joining us for The Pipes Magazine Radio Show—the only radio talk show for pipe smokers and collectors. We broadcast weekly, every Tuesday at 8 pm eastern USA time and are available on nearly all podcast sites and apps. Listen on your computer, tablet, phone and even in the car! Our Featured Interview tonight is with Pipe Maker Randy Wiley. Randy got into pipe making by accident, and it’s a great story. He has been making pipes for over 30-years, and has many excellent pipes available from several retailers. For “Pipe Parts”, Brian will respond to a Facebook message he received from Timothy Fernandez. Timothy asked why there are so many nautical themed pipe tobaccos. Brian found out some pretty interesting stuff while researching this, and it goes beyond tobaccos. (It turns out that those sailors were naughty boys.) Sit back, relax with your pipe, and enjoy The Pipes Magazine Radio Show!

Tonight’s show is sponsored by Sutliff-Tobacco.com, CupOJoes.com, SmokingPipes.com, Missouri Meerschaum, 4noggins.com, MeerschaumStore.com, Cornell & Diehl, and Savinelli Pipes and Tobaccos. Please give them some consideration when making your next pipe or tobacco purchase.

We hope you enjoy our 1-hour show produced just for you—the pipe smoker and collector. The following link will launch a pop-up player. Alternatively, you can download the show in iTunes and other podcast sites and apps after the initial broadcast is complete here.

  • Hi Brian,
IPSD- Opened a tin of Red Ribbon and smoked two bowls.
Randy Wiley is a pipe maker of long standing. I have had several of his pipes and they are good smokers. Interesting how the marketing of his pipes changed over the years. He has always been known for oil curing his briar. His shapes have always been interesting. If I recall correctly, I found one of his pipes back in the 90s in Hawaii.
Music – Dizzy Gillespie and the St Louis Blues was a good choice.
Rant -Ebay, everyone wants their cut of the sale. It is sort of like taxation.
Great interview Brian. Have a good time in St. Louis.

  • I’d love to visit Randy’s shop and talk with him about his craft.
I’m headed to Hillsborough County next week. hint hint

  • The Nautical themed “Pipe Parts” was very entertaining. It reminded me of the old country song “Dang Me” that had the lyric “My pappy was a pistol, I’m a son-of-a-gun!”
Randy Wiley laughs way too much for a man his age. He makes a decent pipe at a modest price. It is amazing that he can crank out 1,000 pipes a year.
Folks are constantly surprised by eBay’s failure to run their business in a way that is conducive to their own personal happiness. Publicly traded companies are like that.

  • Past two shows have been dy-no-mite! Great work Brian. For IPSD I cracked a tin of Briar Fox from 2004 and picked up two new pipes smokingpipes.com. I also went to my local pub and smoked many bowls with the barkeep (gave him a pipe to get off cigarettes).
Pretty interesting when you think of the first ambassadors of our hobby being old salty dogs. It’s nice to know we continue their tradition. I’ve been curious about Randy since I picked up a birth year Sea Reef bent dublin about a year ago. He sounds like a really fun guy and I was laughing right along with you. Wonder who has the infamous pipe that he was making when he almost castrated himself…
Music selection was great, gotta love Dizzy. Any chance we can get an Ian Anderson or Jethro Tull son in the future?

  • As they say, “you can’t judge a book” Randy’s picture comes across as he might be hard to interview. However, he was personable and enjoys a good laugh. Great music choice as well.
