I know this is a fairly bold and perhaps sophomoric idea, especially for a first post, but I couldn't resist. So, what are your top five favorite pipe tobacco blends of all time? Feel free to elaborate on each pick.
I've been smoking pipe tobacco off and on for about nine years. I've been hooked on the GLP blends mostly, but now I feel an inkling to branch out. Here are my own top five blends from my admittedly limited smoking career, in no particular order:
Fillmore

Chelsea Morning

Westminster

Haddo's Delight

Nightcap

Welcome to the Forum!
Actually, posts like this come up all the time. I'm not quite sure I see how they help anyone -- after all, most of us are pretty vocal about our favorites in numerous posts -- but I'm happy to play along. Note, though, that my list would be different if I included blends no longer in production or multiple blends from the same blender. For current-production blends from five different blenders, though, my Top 5 today ('cause the list could change tomorrow!) are:
Esoterica Penzance

Rattray Jocks Mixture

McClelland Grand Orientals: Yenidje Highlander

G.L. Pease Westminster

Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake

Lane Limited's 1Q

Mac Baren's 7 Seas Regular

Peterson's Holiday Season 2012

Mac Baren's 7 Seas Royal

FVF well aged

Stokebbyes Navy Flake

Escudo

1Q

FVF relatively fresh

I know I put FVF twice but for 2 good reasons: 1.when you have it with 1 year or less and 5+ years or more of age its really like two different tobaccos

2. I love it that much :nana:

This one was tough for me.

The term "All Time" made it so.
Here's mine, one of which I haven't seen in a long-long time.
1Q

Samuel Gawith Grousemoor

G.L. Pease Haddo's Delight

Peterson Irish Oak

Wessex Brigade Apple... (It bit like a junk yard dog, and would ghost a pipe on the first puff... But, Oh So Good. Unfortunately it's no longer available.)

Wessex Brigade also has a bit of history attached to it. The British Army (circa Revolutionary War) had different blends for each Company. The reason being... For example: a Commander or a messenger would be able to identify or find a unit's location by the tobacco note even in the dark (very useful).

Few ever get tired of talking about their favorite tobaccos! The first couple are always easy, limiting to five is always tough. My current list:
- Escudo

- PS Luxury Bullseye Flake

- GLP Haddo's Delight

- H&H Anniversary Kake

- PS Luxury Navy Flake

Hmm...

Orlik's Dark Strong Kentucky

Escudo

Tie...Dan Pipe--Limericks of Ireland/Virginia Slices

McClelland--Dark Star

Nightcap (this may sound weird--but I like mixing this with Butera Pelican)
To give voice to the inverse...

I have developed a rabid hatred of any tobacco that has even been in contact with the Lakeland scent..Erinmore--Bob's Choc Flake...

If Lakeland and that crap was the only thing available...I will sell all my pipes (actually pitch them b/c they would have been ruined probably by that garbage.)

I'm piping up (so to speak) just for comic relief. These guys sound like they've tried more and better

blends than I have by far. My top picks, though not necessarily in order, are Dunhill's Mixture 965;

Dunhill's Nightcap; Orlik sliced golden; Altadis Balkan II; Altadis Black and Golden Cavendish B27; and

Altadis Black Cavendish B20. For over-the-counter, I like Granger and Prince Albert. There's a blend

sold by my local independent, English Oriental, but I'm not sure of the source, but it's a good medium

strength English blend. Some variety is appreciated, even when every bowl isn't a hit.

In my rotation without fail or apology:
Nightcap

Penzance

GLP JackKnife Plug

PS LNF

PH Dark Strong Flake
This may seem to be several versions of two things, but, as Whitman said, "Do I contradict myself? Very well, then, I contradict myself." :)
