Look, we've all posted our love for this or that.

And *this* that this guy loves is absolutely a crazy price.

But wait *that* guy's favorite is as cheap as donkey farts.

    Hey we all have favorites.

    What is yours?

Be absolutely ready to explain *why* before you post!

    Oh and one more thing.

Please, post nothing here about how great that 10-year-old, no longer available (even if compared to the new stuff) blend is. Good for you for having that. We don't want to hear it.

We're talking what's out there now.

So put on your big boy pants and tell us how it is.

    Thanks!

My absolute favorite is the tinned Three Nuns when it had perique instead of Kentucky. It never burns my mouth, always tastes great and consistent with the right amount of perique. It's strong enough to give me the kick I want, but not so strong that I ever need a break from it - though I found it more of a treat when I only smoke it once a day or so. Very little or no dottle; it burns evenly and ages wonderfully, too.

We all know some tobaccos taste better in some pipes than in others, but I've found that this version smokes well in every pipe I've ever tried it in, though once I dedicate a pipe to it, I smoke nothing else in it. I have a stash of tins from the old days, and before I secured a number of the current version, I limited myself to one tin every month or two. I'm smoking the new version until I'm out of it, which will take me sometime into next summer, most likely. The new version is good, but it sure doesn't have the same kick or spice of my favorite version. But next year, when I've finished the current blend, I'm back to the old version!

Btw, the pouch version is made by evil Martians hell bent on destroying the taste buds of the ill-advised! Orson Welles told me that!

    Jiminks -- sorry, you lose.

I'm asking about what is available *TODAY* d00d.

"When it had Perique" or WTF even is a non sequitur.

    Thanks for trying though!

Rattrays 3 Noggins . The Viginias are top notch and the addition of unflavored cavendish adds a sweetness . I prefer a blend with more Oriental leaf over Latakia .The blend has depth and complexity and seems to change with each sip of the pipe . It will leave a strong after taste in your mouth that lingers. I do not think this blend is for everyone and to me it is better with a little age on it about 3 years . This probably accounts for the varied reviews . I can taste vanilla ,salt ,campfire ,figs, pepper and dark chocolate in the backgound but they are elusive and subdued . Everyone tries to put this tobacco into a class Scottish , Balkin , English if you try do this it will fall short of your expectations as it is in a class by itself .

Igloo, I also love a Virginia/Oriental with no Latakia.

Thanks for sharing and I will definitely check out that Rattray's 3 Noggins and try to remember that if I buy any, it has to be aged 3 years

It does not have to be aged but sometimes some tobaccos need time . That is why God invented Mason jars and cable tv .

Hell, I personally have lots of aged tobacco that no longer need time.

To narrow it down once more for this thread -- tobacco here and now, please and thank you.

The only bad thing about threads like this one is that it is so hard for a lot of people to pick one absolute, concrete, definitive tobacco because so many people enjoy a wide variety of different blends and types of tobacco for so many different reasons that they don't like to be nailed down to a definitive choice.

Me? What the hell. I'll give it a shot.

Scotty's Butternut Burley available from Pipesandcigars.com. It's the perfect mixture of taste, aroma, cool burning, no tongue bite, available at a very low cost, and it's something that I could easily smoke all day every day. Only bad part about it is that it takes a little extra time to dry out than most blends, but it is well worth it.

It's a bit difficult to point on "the one", as there is so much tobacco and i probably just tried about 3%....so far, but if I can mention 3 "desert island" tobaccos it must be:

Capstan Orignial (blue) for several reasons. It has a history and soul, it has good amount of nicotine, it tastes pure with something interesting in there, it burns perfect and never bites. I have never stored it, but I am sure it will age like single malt.

Three Nuns. I have never tasted the old version. Not from the 90's not from the 70' not from the 30's but the one they make now tastes sooo good I will not think too much about it. It is nicely packet, smells strong and is perfect what comes to nicotine. As I only smoke after food, and inhale and like it, i prefere my tobacco strong and full. It also has the soul and mythical aura that gives me a feeling of history when I smoke it. The only drawback is that it seems to dry out too quickly after opened.

Davidoff Flake Medallions is probably the only tobacco with black cavendish I really like. It must be the most exclusive looking, feeling, tasting tobacco I've tried.

I can mention alot of others like Scottish Flake, Royal Yacht, Orlik, Irish Oak, University Flake, Irish Flake. I hve not had the chance to try any of the american tobaccos, wich I really want, but they are impossible to get here. I have some plans how to fix it though so maybe I change my list later on.

I feel as though maybe if you were to broaden your horizons to include tobaccos from different categories, you would get a lot more positive answers. People tend to smoke different kinds of blends and can't narrow it down to one blend because we like so many different varieties of tobaccos. Now if you were to separate choices into categories like the following, you'd get a much more broad range of answers:

    1. Favorite Burley
    2. Favorite English
    3. Favorite Aromatic
    4. Favorite Virginia

In which case, my list would look like this:

    1. Butternut Burley (obviously)
    2. Larry's Blend from Hearth and Home
    3. 7 Seas Royal from MacBaren
    4. Haddo's Delight by G.L. Pease

I smoke Aromatic and English more than anything else, and having to pick a single blend that stands out above the rest is really difficult because I like different blends for different reasons.

Sherlock Holmes Pipe Club - Great Hiatus - Excellent english blend.

But I think more so than anything you need suggestions about which blenders to look into. At the review website I linked above, try looking up:

    Lane Limited
    Peter Stokkebye
    Cornell & Diehl
    Seattle Pipe Club
    MacBaren

read some reviews, do some research about the different strains of tobacco (listed as contents on that review website)

    that's what I suggest.

    Happy Puffin'

Right now it's a toss up between 7 Seas Regular and 1Q. Both of them have a quality leaf that comes through from time to time during the smoke and the casings are done, imo, just right. They both smoke pretty cool for me and burn evenly without needing many relights. Plus, they have a wonderful room note and I almost always get compliments from others on the smell. Another bonus is they're both available in bulk at a great price.

Guys I think Roth is just trying to have a little fun and get us to choose one tobacco out of all the ones we love. I agree choosing just one is tough but I understand what he is trying to do. So I will play.

If I had to choose, my go to NUMBER ONE BLEND IS..........drum rollllllllllllllllllllllll.

    Fribourg&Treyer Cut Virginia Plug

To me it is the perfect smoke. It is bright, and sweet. It has depth and body. It burns perfectly right out of the tin. I could smoke it all day long and it is really a beautiful flake to look at.

    OK Roth, how'd I do?

Rattray's Bagpiper's Dream. It has several cuts, ribbon, broken flake, coins, etc. The quality of the tobacco is the highest and the cognac topping is incredible. It lights easily and stays lit with a heavenly room note.

A toss up between St. James Flake and Stonehaven. Both offer a nice nic punch. The Stonehaven has a flavor I cannot describe that I crave and the St. James has just the right amount of Perique to keep things interesting while letting the VA's shine thru nicely.

Right now it's McClelland's Syrian Full Balkan. If it is actually grown in Syria, their civil war may make it unavailable.

I apologize for offending anyone here as this was certainly was not my intention.

I realize it's almost impossible to pick just ONE blend above all others, but thought we could have some fun with it and also come up with some great suggestions of what others like that we may want to try.

Regarding the civil war in Syria, I think the tobacco growers/processors were already out of business several years before the war. That's why GL Pease hasn't been able to replenish his stockpile after the warehouse fire that destroyed the C&D stash... There is no more to be had.

When McClelland and MacBaren and whoever else that has remaining reserves of Syrian latakia run out, then the supply is already gone permanently unless growers return to the scene. If Syria remains unstable then that is definitely not going to happen. It may already be too late if the knowledgeable and experienced people are no longer available to run the operations... Enjoy your Syrian Full Balkan while you can get it!

If I had to pick one tobacco it'd be Escudo Navy Deluxe, but there are recent contenders for that crown and I have no decided if they are worthy for the number one spot...

Solani Sweet X Mystery. It's a to-die-for delicious aromatic with superbly balanced flavors and a surprising (mysterious) woodsy, herbal complexity that I haven't found in other aromatics. The aroma from the tin is just as delightful as the flavor of the smoke, and I can only imagine how wonderful the room note is.

I really like English blends, too, but none that I've tried so far quite matches my fondness for Sweet X Mystery.

By the way, speaking of tobaccos,
do you think it is a good idea to keep yours in a humidor?
I was thinking of buying a cheap humidor exclusively for my pouches!
The clerk at a tobacconist's told me I could also buy a glass container from the super market, the ones that seal with a band of rubber, and just buy a small humidor-sponge...
I don't want to mess up the thread, just looking for advice!
    Thank you and sorry!

I'm not that experienced, but for me, it's a toss up between my B&M's Black Truffle, and aro with Lat and real truffles in it, and justforhim.com's Shortcut to Mushrooms. To me, it tastes like creamy mushrooms. Haven't seen a bad review yet.

Currently I like aromatics and my fav thus far is from Pipeworks & Wilke:

    WILKE No. 191
    The description:
A tobacco for all seasons, the right aroma and the right taste make this my number one selling tobacco! The natural flavors of vanilla beans and Vermont honey are combined with Virginias, matured Kentucky Burley and a combination of 3 toasted Black Cavendishes to create this most popular mild slow burning blend.

It's a tobacco that simply delivers exceptional flavor.

    Welcome, JayWellington!

I assume you're talking about a cigar humidor for your pouches of tobacco? I think it should be fine to use an empty humidor for storing pipe tobacco pouches -- with a couple caviats. I wouldn't store cigars in the same humidor as your pipe tobacco pouches. Also, some care should be taken regarding humidification -- cigars are best stored at much higher relative humidity (62% RH to 68% RH) compared to pipe tobacco -- see this article http://pipesmagazine.com/blog/out-of-the-ashes/dust-in-the-wind-a-primer-on-tobacco-moisture/

If the ambient humidity where you live is very low (or maybe dry in you home during winter months), you could try one of those inexpensive little aluminum pucks (a buck of so at most B&Ms) ... after some trial and error, you should likely come up with the right levels to suit you.

    Molto dolce

I know what I need, smoke, I can't recall the last time I tasted it....Gandalf in the mines of Moria.

"we shall have to share pipes, as good friends must at a pinch'....'I keep a treasure or two near my skin, as precious as rings to me. Here's one: my old wooden pipe. And here's another an unused one...He held up a small pipe with a wide flattened bowl, and handed it to Gimli. 'Does that settle the score between us', said Merry. 'Most noble hobbit, it leaves me deep in your debt."

    Orlik Golden Sliced.

Medium bodied, sweet virginia, very small amounts of perique for a zing! A must try for VA lovers, and a constant go-to for me.

I'm only five months into this so I'm still looking for my absolute favorite. I'd have to say that Blackhouse is leading the pack followed close by Mississippi Mud. Of course I still have a way to go and plenty of baccy to try. Thanks for the post as with a bunch of other posts its helping to build my TAD list.

Lane RLP-6. It's all I have smoked since I can remember.
Why ? The perfect match for a cup (or two) of black roasted coffee. And I'm talking roasted so dark that it is oily.

I'm still new to pipes so I probably haven't found "the one" yet, but right now I gotta say Sam Gawith Brown #4 Kendall Twist + fresh brewed espresso = heaven.

My favorite blend is actually a custom blend of mine. It is a mix between my two favorite pipe tobaccos from the local tobacco store. They are called Washington Light Brigade, a crisp and light tobacco blend with a sweet aroma. The second is H.L. Hunley, an dark and thick tobacco with a strong earthy taste and more of a honey-ish aroma. The mixture often has people asking me if I'm smoking black cherry flavored tobacco. What I do is I take a mason's jar and fill it 2/3 full of WLB and then fill the rest with HLH. The resulting mix is a tobacco that is flavorable on the palette and a welcome smoke at any hour of the day. The local store doesn't murder me on the price and I come in about every 3 weeks for a refill. A few of the regulars actually enjoy my mix. I've only been smoking pipe for 3 years and to date, this is my favorite blend.

Using the criterion of what is readily available, my single favorite would be Key Largo by GL Pease. Cool and slow burning broken flake, creamy English with cigar leaf spice.
Using the criterion of what is occasionally available, a four-way tie between Smoker's Haven's Our Best Blend and Exotique, the new Germain Balkan Sobraine, and Esoterica's Stonehaven.

I am relatively new to pipe smoking and I could not pick only one. I am still enjoying trying it all to figure it out. It is like taking a kid in a candy store for the first time and saying you can only have one bite. I was able to narrow it down to several in a category. I like these because of the flavor, ease to keep lit, and after taste. I do not "Hot Box" the pipe so the ones below didn't get too hot and burn or bite me either. As a beginner simplicity helps me to focus more on the smoke itself. So far though my list of favorites by type in order of liking are:

1 English type: Esoterica- And So To Bed; Dunhill- Night Cap; Ashton- Artisan Blend; Peter Stokkebye - Balkan Sasieni
    2. Aromatic: Brebbia- Romanza (However I am trying Peterson - Nutty Cut, and McClelland - Frog Morton Cellar, and I am really enjoying them)
    3. VA/Burley: Mac Baren- Old Dark Fired; Esoterica-Stone Haven, Peter Stokkebye-Escudo Navy Delux

DunHill- Early Morning Pipe is in its own category lol

Right this second, MacBaren HH Old Dark Fired. I love this and it packs a punch. I just received a very meager one big flake sample of St. James Flake and if the second bowl is as good as the first, It may take the title.

There's nothing quite like tobacco: it's the passion of decent folk, and whoever lives without tobacco doesn't deserve to live.
