It's been a long time since I did one of these, but it took some time to find more forgotten and archaic words to post. Today we have a word, while not so much forgotten, has definitely lost an original meaning as modern society slouches towards a smoke-free world.
--Today's Word--
Whiffler

whif·fler - ˈhwi-flər, ˈwi-
n.

1. A puffer of tobacco. Hence, metaphorically, a trifling fellow. (pg. 927. A Dictionary of Archaic and Provincial Word, Volume 2)
modern usage

1. a person who frequently changes opinions or course

2. a person who uses shifts and evasions in argument

Neat list! Wikipedia has used the term kapnismology in a tobacco/pipe context, defining it as the study of smoke.

Maybe you would consider adding that to this list.

So in an extreme case one could be a waffling whiffler? Or,if musical, a waffling whistling whiffler.

Interestingly there is a book of pipe-related prose and poetry titled "Whifflets," compiled by A.M. Jenkinson, and which was published in 1897, doubtless to be read and loved by whifflers of that era!

Of course, a gala dance, held in honor of smokers, would be a Whiffle Ball.
Sorry, I just had to have a swing at that one, or papipeguy would think that I didn't have the balls to comment.

Fun, but #7 is not correct, aept1.

Also, #6 doesn’t mean a husband and wife at odds, but rather when they are both spendthrifts they will "burn" through their money quicker.
