Would an early Kaywoodie ever have a gold band from the factory?

I'm looking at buying an early Kaywoodie, but it has a 14k gold band, which I'm guessing isn't original. I have asked for info on what is engraved on the band, but it looks like it might be the owner's name. Is that something that was sometimes done to personalize and protect a pipe? This one looks beautiful.

I never heard of it, but Kaywoodie used to be an up-market pipe, more expensive than a Dunhill.

Its very likely real, I have a gold banded Medico, it has proper hallmarks, I checked it out and it is a legit pipe, Medico Gold Crest. If Medico released pipes with a gold band, surely Kaywoodie did as well!

Maybe the stock gold band was on occasion engraved as a gift presentation pipe, as a present or as an award, with the recipient's name. Just a thought.

The band you are describing sounds like an add-on. That does not necessarily mean it should but you off the pipe.
