There's going to be one very happy seller.

Still 21 hours left on the bidding.

$200 already and they still have almost a full day to work on their closing bid strategies.

$200 seems to be the recent Ebay average for 8oz bags of Penzance, one sold BIN for that, one auction closed for nearly that, and one's not showing up on the "sold" list anymore, but went for ~$230 not too long ago.

Unopened Esoterica Penzance in mint condition. Purchased in 2015

    Highly Collectible.

    1. The value of the item is in the collectible packaging, not in the tobacco itself.
    2. The tobacco within is not for consumption or use.

Good God. I may have to start buying this stuff up and reselling it. I can retire and build my second house.

Thanks to bidding wars, I own one a very rare $800 Savinelli Porto Cervos (I think that's French). I couldn't be more excited. I can't even bring myself to smoke it.

You could try pre-selling it and then snagging some at retail to send out when you can get it, but good luck with that.

When it was showing up at retail over the summer and into the fall, "sold" prices were soon below $100 a bag on Ebay.

But lately it has been scarce at retail, at least on-line, and 2oz tins are averaging $60 out-of-pocket on Ebay, so I guess that it hasn't been hard to make the leap to $200 for four times as much.

I wonder how that Penzance would taste with maybe half an ounce of Blood Red Moon mixed in for a little depth? It could be repackaged and relabeled as "Perchance" for maybe $50.00 after that Penzance bag is sold for $202.00.

Sadly it is a standard price for anything esoterica online in China. I regretted smoking my 50g tin of Penzance here after I saw they can catch 100 dollars here.

Seriously man someone should start selling some cheap sutliff or lane flake and repackage it as Penzance for ebay. You are all good because people paying these prices have never smoked it before and have no clue what they are doing.

ss you might be better off doing a one day auction or Buy it Now. That thing is going to be hanging there for six days and eBay sometimes cancels them, and might give you problems.

I second the one day auction. eBay monitors will cancel the auction and put you on a watch list. If you are a repeat offender they will suspend your account.

eBay's "monitoring" is pretty sketchy. Even when notified about obvious frauds they do zero. If you're a high visibility seller in a particular category you may get monitored, but the millions of anonymous sellers sail through without any attention whatsoever. eBay is just too vast to police, 32 giant marketplaces worldwide when last I counted.

You could just hang them here based on Ebay average pricing, minus the Ebay vig.

Although the Ebay exposure is a lot better probably.

However, you might drive traffic and perhaps new users to this site by doing so.

Out of curiosity I looked at the tin of penzance for sale there, 1 bid @ $55

Anyway, when reading the description I noticed this....

This is being offered under the rules of Ebay and by biding on this item the buyer acknowledges the following:
    1. The value of the item is in the collectible packaging, not in the tobacco itself.
    2. The tobacco within is not for consumption or use.
    3. This collectible tobacco packaging is not be available at any retail outlet and the packaging has a a value that substantially exceeds the current retail price of that tobacco product in the package.
    4. Buyer must be at least 21 years of age.
    5. Both the buyer and the seller are following all applicable laws and shipping regulations for this transaction

Having never bought tobacco from them I'd often wondered how they got around any ATF rules.

@bonanza - thats the tin I listed. I just copied the listing of the 8 oz bag. Reportedly, ads with this info aren't pulled. Of course the rules are a farce and Ebay seems to have no consistent idea of which tins are old and which are new.

Rats!!! Cramped up in my sniping finger!

I'm sitting on 5 bags and 3 tins of Penzance in my cellar. I'm not in either the love it or bash it camps. It's a nice English tobacco. But I'm more of a Va/VaPer guy so I almost never touch it.

My 9 bags of Stonehaven on the other hand, I wouldn't sell at any reasonable price.

I can easily imagine the high bidder being a person to whom money isn't of much concern, had little interest in the tobacco itself, and was actually just enjoying the idea of keeping it out of the hands of the others.

But I take a grim view sometimes. I've also got Tiny Tim's "Tip Toe Thru' the Tulips With Me" in my head.

An empty bag of Esoterica, but is it an empty bag of Stonehaven? Notice also $10 shipping charge. And it is a private auction.

I know the email I would send the winner if I were the seller:. "You won an empty bag of Stonehaven. Do you want to empty it yourself or let me do it?"

My take on the empty bags is that it is probably a shill with multiple accounts, or a shill crew, attempting to establish a market for empty tins & bags.

Or perhaps the buyers know that they are receiving full items (through Reddit or something like that) and he is hiding that from Ebay. He's sold full bags and tins before as such, and is complaining that they pulled his auctions in the descriptions.

The private bidder status always stinks of shade and makes me think that someone is shilling in any case whenever I see that.

Since eBay no longer shows bidders ID's, only their feedback number, I can't think of any legit reason to run a private auction

The eBay rules that are always quoted in these listings are not the same as they once were. A seller is required to show a photo of the empty interior of the tin because only empty tins can be legally sold on eBay. The whole "the value is in the packaging and not the contents" is immaterial because eBay USA now requires that there be NO contents.

Of course this "rules" business is, and has long been, bullshit. eBay USA doesn't allow the selling of tobacco from listings originating in the US. International sellers can sell tobacco on eBay as long as it isn't prohibited by the eBay marketplace that services the country form which the listing originates. And given that these are illegal sales in eBay's eyes, the buyer has zero recourse if they get scammed. eBay does a completely inept job of policing these listings, so people continue to sell vintage tobacco on eBay.

And given that these are illegal sales in eBay's eyes, the buyer has zero recourse if they get scammed.

Good points sablebrush52. I wonder how many people have been scammed by these sky high Esoterica auctions.

Since eBay no longer shows bidders ID's, only their feedback number, I can't think of any legit reason to run a private auction.

Well, they still show a portion of the ID, and if you click on the feedback, you can see the percentage of bids with that buyer, and if they have retracted any bids. Most of the time, a shill bidder account is going to be newly minted with no or little feedback, most if not all bids with the seller (same person or friend), and bid retractions after they run up early bidders and then cut and run. All of this is masked with a private auction.

@balkisobrains, so what legitimate reason is there for a private auction? It seems like an open invitation to shill bidding.

I guess because it stays private. I'm guessing that the feedback would be private too, and not list what an item actually was in your feedback. There are legitimate uses for it such as that, but I think that most of the time the private auctions are used by shills running up their own stuff with burner accounts.

@balkisobrains, maybe there is a legitimate reason, but I share your suspicion. Also I see where some bidders have private feedback. I can't figure out what that is about unless they have something to hide. For all of its ballyhooed protections, eBay still has what are to me glaring opportunities for shill bidding.

Seems like a quasi-black market as a result of quasi-prohibition.

Here's now what I think is going on with the empty bags. The seller apparently recently had a previous listing pulled for a new bag of Penzance. I can see this when I click on "see original listing" through the empty bag auction that just wrapped up. The original one had something like over 20 bids on it, breaking reserve, and went to nearly $200.00 before it presumably got yanked by Ebay. So at that point, this guy has bidders that he can communicate with directly through Ebay, despite them shutting his auction down. He tells them that he'll contact them once he lists his "empty bag" auctions, but ensuring them that he will send the winner the sealed bag that they were originally bidding on. Most likely, the auction would not get shut down (which it did not), and they would have to put their faith in this guy that he would actually send the sealed bag.
