Just thought this might be a interesting topic to talk about. 2 years ago I started pipe smoking again after stopping several years ago. The reason I stopped years ago is because I didn't know how to smoke a pipe properly and just never had a pleasant experience with it. So when I started back this last time a had a new tool to use (a computer) and started to research and learn about pipes, tobacco and the like. I visited several pipe forums to learn about different blends of tobacco and the art of smoking a pipe properly and how to repair and refurbish a pipe. Every time I would do a search, pipesmagazine would be in the results somewhere. I really like the format of this site and how it is set up, But most of all I like the people who participate, everyone seems to be friendly and if you ask a question they will most certainly answer it without being snide or snobbish about it. This makes for a pleasant experience that makes you want to be a part of the forum. Thats why I joined pipemagazine.com.

    Edit: Moved to Pipesmagzine.com. L

I've been smoking pipe for 4 years or so and have visited this site many times during that period. I actually just recently joined because I wanted to rant about people in another forum for a computer game being very unsupportive of pipe smoking. Then figured I'd continue partaking in the discussion!

I joined because its a friendly community on the forum, had good tobacco reviews and some great articles. Those have only gotten stronger over time. The forum is pretty good at policing itself so everything stays fun while allowing for disagreements and discussions to progress. All in all its one of the best pipe sites on the net.

    Yohanan...

I have exact same reasons as you did for joining this forum!! I tried pipesmoking about 6-7 years ago but found it frustrating and as long time cigar aficionado it was easy to let it go and continue with the stogies... I have picked it back up over the last 6 months or so and the major reason I have stuck with it and find it very enjoyable now is the info I have gleaned on this forum and the friendships I have made!!

Like you guys above I was just surfing, and puffing my pipe.
I did some searches and came up with this and the subsequent videos, then decided what the heck...

Same old story here. Smoking my pipe and expanding my knowledge about the hobby led me here. Of course I don't typically jump in to forums because largely I find them to get off topic all too frequently and the point of the forum is lost in the bustle but I stuck in this one because of the tight knit group and the focus.

This site had more information than the other forums I saw, and it keeps me busy enough that I don't have time to check out the others.

I have lots of other hobbies. This is the only forum I participate in. I can find plenty of people locally to share with all my other hobbies. Without the forum I might be just another "closet" smoker.

I was originally attracted to Pipes Magazine because of the articles. I stayed because of the many tips and all I have learned in such a short time. I think I'll continue because of the friendly atmosphere.

I had actually joined this site about a year before actually partaking in the community. I was a member of two other forums. One, snobbish and wouldn't allow any type of conversation outside of pipes and tobacco. The other site, so loosely run that spam ads started taking over the content and people weren't posting very often.

When that started happening on the last site I was a member of, I started reading here more often and came to liking the articles and the tone of the forums. Then it just made sense to start contributing to the content.

Looking for help/information on the hobby that I was really starting to enjoy. I like the fact that it's more than just a forum (informative articles, reviews, lots of great adverts, etc.) as a few of the others are simply forums.

I spend a lot of time on the computer working at home. Many times the wife is away, traveling for work. I had belonged to several forums, and I either got bored or mostly because there would be an influx of new members and an "older and wiser" member would get all pissed off because instead or the same 5 - 10 people posting it was now 15 - 20. They felt some of the "coziness" was gone hated seeing the same topics come up again and again and they would post something that just pissed people off and generally chase people away.

Or the forums were dedicated only to one particular topic, no general discussions, and that just gets really old really fast when you can't stray out side of one topic. And i hope it's been a place that others have been able to learn something from lil' ol' me as well.

I do photography, but I wanted to stay away from something related to work, I was searching pipe stuff and happened upon this site, and, well I saw the forum at the time I trolled some of the posts, it looked like a very friendly place to be, so voila - here I am.

It's been an awesome place to learn lots of good stuff on pipe smoking and, quite frankly, a lot of general stuff as well.

I haven't had the pleasure to meet any forum members yet - but yet everybody I would consider friends.

And I must say, it's been a good decision as this site has now led me to 2 new clients as well !

Forced to stop smoking cigarellos, so the pipe seemed like a good, less expensive alternative.

Bought a "toy" meer, a bag of Borkum Riff and thought I was going to die, it was ghastly. Went researching google to see how our forefathers did it and managed to stick with it ... found PipeMagazine, read everything I could, bought more pipes, decent baccy and have finally started appreciating the pipe and different baccys thanks to the knowledge and experience here.

I'd been smoking a pipe for about 18 years on a very occasional basis, but had never had a eureka moment that made me really understand how pleasurable it could be. I stopped smoking cigarettes a year ago, and the pipe called to me again...I decided to do a little research, and checked out several forum sites. PM.com obviously surpassed them all in depth of content and quality of community. I lurked for a while, learned a whole lot about what I'd been missing, and finally jumped in--and glad I did. The eureka moment came for me, a perfect smoke that fully ignited my passion for pipes, and now I'm here to share what I can and continue learning from all who participate.

I joined because of the neat-o decoder ring you get after becoming a Preferred Member...

Actually I joined because I was looking for info on churchwardens like Jeremy Brett smoked in the Sherlock Holmes series using Google. I've since learned that Kevin is a guru of Search Engine Optimization, which is why PM.com almost always comes up as a first hit for just about anything pipe. I never found the info I wanted BUT I found a whole hell of a lot more. I had only been smoking for 4 months when joined and this site really helped me get to a point where I can enjoy my pipes. It's also due to this site that my bank account has suffered. Given my current smoking rates, the amount of tobacco I have should last me until some time in the 22nd Century...

Thanks to Kevin (plus all of his helpers and the members of this site) for making this hobby better for me through this wonderful site!

I found this site via finding Bob's videos on packing a pipe. I lurked for a few days before I felt I had to ask a question or two. So I joined up, introduced myself and got to it! Faces have come and gone, but the camaraderie remains. Glad to share.

I joined because I enjoy shooting the breeze about pipes and tobacco. I have been an active member of the Yahoo Pipesmokers2 group for about 8 years, and have enjoyed it immensely. Seems to be no overlap between the groups, which is kinda interesting.

My brother bought me the issue of Playboy that came out when i was born, October 1971, the ads were the best part of the magazine, cars, body spray of the time, non-wrinkle suits and Black Label beer. LOL. It contained 2 different pipe ads. as a cigar smoker i thought there must be a culture of pipe smokers as well. i used google and found this site and learned ALOT i didn't know and never otherwise would have discovered about pipes.

I joined because I liked the articles. I started posting in the forums, and then Kevin turned me onto Nat Sherman #580 and Old Oxford. After I tried those I knew I loved the site.

I joined because of the advice, reviews, experiences of other pipe smokers...and because the subscription is free! Got a ways to go before I get my decoder ring.
