    Bulldogs!

I thought it might be great to have a thread to post photos of your dogs!

Bulldogs are cool,…..although I have to admit that until recently I thought quite the contrary.

I have thanked Uncle Arthur for piquing my interest in them just last winter when he explained that the style was not, as I had assumed, a rather recent development,....he told me that they became popular early in the last century and not, again as I had assumed, in the 1960’s.

So I decided to follow up on that, digging around I found and read an article describing what made a pipe a “Bulldog” and found a lot of very old photos of gentlemen smoking early examples of the style.

With a new appreciation of the style, I decided to pick up an old Marxman on ebay,....and after a decent restoration, discovered that it was one of the most comfortable pipes in my collection not to mention the fact that it smoked better than dang near every one of them!

I liked it so much I quickly picked up two more,….a GBD and a Comoy’s, both in serious need of a resto,…which I just finished (pun intended) last night.

So I thought it might be fun to see pics of everyone else's Bulldogs!

GBD (fully restored, it wasn't too bad, dents and dings)

Comoy's (fully restored, it was the worst piece of garbage you could imagine!)

Marxman (fully restored, it wasn't too bad either)

Why does it seem that todays youth has added lead paintchips to their daily diet!?!

Nice dogs, although I feel all of us forum members should throw you a "Boot Party" for bringing up that horrible song again...

I love the Comoy's dog. Good job on the restorations.

The bulldog shape is my favorite by far, though I like a bend in the stem of some sort.

Great dogs Tommy! My favorite shape, after billiards. I like straight as well as bent bulldogs. Some folks throw in the Rhodesians in this class as well... I'll try to post a few of my dogs...just got to charge up the phone camera first.. You certainly have the beginnings of a nice collection.

    Something like this, Janko?

I want to add a couple more bulldogs to my collection, but have yet to find the one that really catches my eye. I have a REALLY old Peterson bent bulldog that needs a lot of tlc and I haven't figured out just how to bring it back to life yet. There are a lot of dent in the silver band and the rim of the bowl is pretty tore up and worn. I'm sure I'll figure it out one of these days.

On the left is my Stanwell Colonial 186. On the right is my Rinaldo Bent Rhodesian.

Southerners don't talk slow because they're dumb, we do it because there's really no rush.

Here are some of my favorite bulldogs. All bought from http://www.smokingpipes.com/. Thanks Sykes! The three Dunhills were bought as estate pipes, each for under $200. All three came from the estate of Aaron Spelling. Never heard of him before buying his pipes, but here is the blurb:

Wikipedia: "Aaron Spelling (April 22, 1923 – June 23, 2006) was an American film and television producer. As of 2009, Spelling's eponymous production company Spelling Television holds the record as the most prolific television writer, with 218 producer and executive producer credits. Forbes ranked him the 11th top-earning dead celebrity in 2009". Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Spelling

Pair of Peterson 80S Donegal Rocky saddle-bit bent bulldogs. Originally P-lip, I filed them down to resemble fishtails.

Here is a Dunhill Shell 3104 (1984). Small reliable smoker. When broken down, it fits into my leather tobacco bag, along with lighter for an on-the-go kit.

And here is a Dunhill Bruyere 483 3A (1975). Classic English Bulldog.

Lastly, a Dunhill Cumberland 3204 (no date stamp), smooth rim.

    Happy smoking.

Milan Tobacconists has a Father's Day sale on Ben Wade pipes. Their bulldogs are fairly beefy pipes with group 5 or 6 bowl capacities.
Their prices look pretty good too! Looks like $25 - $35 off MSRP. I have one and it smokes very nicely. The sales hype states they're
made by Duncan Briars in the Dunhill factory. The only downside with mine is I have to futz around a lot to get a pipe cleaner in.

Absolutely beautiful pipes! Tommy that pipe looks worlds apart after your restoration, great job. hmm if someone made a Rhodesian with a ridge along the back side, would it also be considered a dog?

    "A Rhodesian Ridgeback..."

Thanks, BriarBully,...I appreciate that. That pipe was the most awful smelling dirty pipe I had ever seen. You couldn't get your pinky in the chamber, the stem and shank were gunked solid, the stem bit almost through and it was so sticky I hated to hold the nasty thing.

Great pipes Uncle Arthur! That's an impressive collection!

At first I thought you were talking about bulldog puppies. I love those little guys. Plan on getting two of my own eventually. As far as pipes though I didn't like the bulldog/rhodesian style at first. After I got a Peterson Aran B5 though, which is a semi-bent rohdesian I believe, I fell in love with them. I plan on getting many more bulldogs and rhodesians. Here's a picture of my Aran B5.

Okay, so educate the noob. Which trait is it that makes a bulldog a bulldog? Is it the diamond shaped shank (I saw a couple in there with round ones)? Is it the beveled bowl?

The answer to that question is debatable.

Most agree that the basic shape of a bulldog/rhodesian is defined by the beveled edge at the mouth of the bowl (the cross section resembles two cones put together and the points cut off). The bowl typically (not always) has a one or more grooves cut in it near the kick of the bevel.

There are generally two schools of thought as to the what differentiates the two shapes.

    1. A bulldog has a straight diamond shank and all others are rhodesians.
    2. Bulldogs have diamond shanks (straight or bent), while rhodesians have round shanks (straight or bent).

    I subscribe to the second.

From talking to some carvers, its one of the more difficult classic shapes to make right. The transition for straight to the curve is especially difficult.

I thought it was more the shape of the bowl that differentiated a bulldog from a a rhodesian. I was under the impression that rhodesians kind of flare out a little more at the top of the bowl. But then again I've only been piping seriously for around a year now and I'm still getting used to the different shape names.

    Bulldogs vs. Rhodesians
Lord your observations on the shape of the bowl seem to be correct...
However; my Bulldog leans toward the Rhodesian shape as described by you.
But, IMHO the difference is really in the type of stem used that differentiates one from the other.

Here is my understanding of the differences:
    Bulldog: has a tapered stem
Bent bulldog: has a fishtail type stem with and is bent
    HOWEVER:
Rhodesian: is has a fishtail type stem
Bent Rhodesian: has a tapered stem and is bent.
So... in summation: a Bent Bulldog has a "bent" Rhodesian stem, and a Bent Rhodesian has a "straight" Bulldog stem. Go figure..

Thanks for the chart Lawrence. Maybe I'll print it out and look over it a while. Kind of get used to the shapes and their names. I see what you mean about the stems and shanks being different.

    No problem Lord.
However; one must bear in mind that even these charts (and they are numerous) have differences.
But, I think that is a whole "nuther" topic for discussion.

    Gentlemen,

I am hesitant to post this because I want to bid on it (other than it looks poorly cared for) but as aficionados of the bulldog, this one is worth the look just for its uniqueness. I have to admit, I've been looking at it for a few minutes now and it's bizarre...not so much the pipe but how your eye sees it like its some sort of Escher print. In my head I keep wanting to correct the shank to the diamond position rather than square!

    Very nice Haunted.
A good cleaning will correct a multitude of sins.
I fear that a knife has nicked the rim, but not badly.
I particularly like the birds eyes above the lines.

Here's a Longchamp Bulldog Jasongone rusticated for me.
