I was out and about today with my family, and we went to several antique shop. I picked both of these today.

The next one I am super excited about to say the least.

If pipedia is to be believed it is a 1984 Ashton XX Pebble Grain Unsmoked, and I payed $20! I am a little torn though as my wife thinks I should ebay this bad boy, but part of me, a big part, wants to load it up and go!

Dayum!

:!:
Great find on the Ashton!!!
As a first year production unsmoked pipe,

I think it'd easily pull $200+ at auction!
The uncircled x's further clarify that it is truly a 1984 pipe.
Congrats!

edit - you're right, I mistyped, not 1983, but 1984 - still highly sought after!
There were only 31 Ashton pipes made in 1983, so those are very rare.

Tex I know how important marital bliss is. I'd be happy to give you $40 for the Ashton so that you can wow her by doubling your money!
But seriously, keep that thing and smoke it. What a great score.

That Ashton. Wow. Excellent score.
My philosophy on antique finds like that is that I keep them. I might not spend $200+ for that pipe. But if I get it for $20, I'm not going to sell it, even for what it's worth.
Now, if I find a vintage Sixten Ivarsson for $20, that i could sell for say $5,000+ -- well THAT might be a different story.
But I guess if the possible fetch is within an order of magnitude of the price I lucked out to pay, I'' hang on and enjoy the pipe.

The verdict is in, I'm keeping this thing! I'm going to wait for the right moment to smoke it though. I'm not sure what metric will decide the right moment only that Ill know it when it comes.

I've found several times now that it really pays off to ask the owner oif they have anything behind the counter. Often they will keep ones that are obviously nicer but often they don't really know much about them.
