Does anyone know whether the description of a Walnut pipe means the pipe

is made out of walnut wood, or is it briar with a walnut stain? It seems like

walnut pipes appear as a sort of series by a number of pipe makers, but there

is never clarification of this point, which is irritating. I'm inclined to think that

it is just a walnut shade of stain on briar, but I don't know for sure.

I don't know specifically what pipes you're referring to. Could be any or all of the above, though I wouldn't expect walnut to be particularly good wood for pipes.

But you made me think of the old timers that made pipes out a walnut shell and a reed stem.

Walnut, Cherry, Maple, Pearwood, etc ... are all used in pipe making.
While considered a "lesser" choice than Briar, they are good hard woods.
I believe Mr Brog uses some of these materials.

Some makers use walnut to describe the color of the finish, some even rusticate pipes to look like a nut.

cobguy, fascinating article. Among other things, it is a kind of marvel that they

discovered the heath species that produces briar. I guess in buying pipes described

as walnut, you have to ask to determine if it is the actual wood or the stain used on

briar. Perhaps most retailers don't know.

I'm with jarit here. I've never heard of using walnut for a bowl. I suppose it could be done but I would be a little concerned about the high tannins. I use it for smoking meat sometimes.

I have been thinking of trying these 'alternate' woods as a pipe and see how much of a difference I could detect between that and the briar.
@ cosmicfolklore that would be some experience!

There are some beautiful pipes made from Manzanita as well.
Here's a great example with some nice info about the wood itself:

Cup O Joes sent me a prompt response to a "contact us" inquiry stating that the Walnut Pipes

on their BC list, which are made by BC but unstamped, are made of briar but stained in walnut

color, a sort of deep gray that still shows grain. I guess with each retailer you just have to ask,

but kudos to Cup O Joes for follow-up. Another major online retailer did not answer a similar

inquiry on a different subject, not mentioning any names here.
