Been a while since I've been on here... and been even longer since I last ordered some tobacco. I only smoke 1-2 times a week, so, all my samplers lasted quite a while.
So far I've learned that I very much dislike aromatics, like cherry, vanilla, etc... smell great in the tin, not a fan of them when smoked.
Friend for my BDay, got me a tin of Old Dublin, and so far, it's been my absolute fav smoke. I'm also a fan of Limey Ol' Bastard, and Bald Headed Teacher, so... I guess English Blends?
I'm looking to order another Old Dublin, and wondered if anyone had some recommendations of similar/different style tobaccos to try?
I've tried quite a few so far... Prince Albert I liked, Lane 1Q was good but nothing special. Sir Walter tasted ok, but hated the smell for some reason. Molto Dolce and Connoisseur's Choice are ok, but, not planning on buying again. Tried navy flake, my mixture 965 as well. The really flavoured ones like McClelland Vanilla Black, Lane Very Cherry, one called Trout Stream, etc are flat out a no-go... ended up giving those away.
Is there a style/blend type I should be trying next? Something I missed?

Welcome back! I don't see any Va/Per or Dark Fired blends.
Have you tried anything from GL Pease or C&D?

Hmm. I really dig Old Dublin. Petersons new english blend Wild Atlantic is good too. I would say it's a touch lighter than Old Dublin but more complex in the taste department. I would recommend it.
Dunhill London Mixture is also an English blend worth trying

Old Dublin is a great smoke. I would suggest White Knight and GH Balkan Mixture.

C&D I guess is Cornell and Diehl? I haven't tried their stuff, GL Pease I'm not sure I've heard of them. I buy from 4Noggins, prices have always been good and I've never been hit with duty when ships to Canada. Maybe they don't carry that brand.
I've eye'd up the Frog Morton stuff a few times, but I would like to try new stuff as well... Va/Per I haven't tried, and dark fired may be good as well. Any recommendations? I usually buy the bulk 2oz samplers from 4Noggins, just in case I don't like the stuff, as was the case with those Cherry/Vanilla blends.

Here's a list of similar blends that I bought.

I've smoked all but one of them and you hear nothing but good things about any of them. My opinion included.

I've really been enjoying lane 125th lately. It is a VA/Per blend. The Frog Morton blends are pretty good too.

As far as taxes go, never buy something you can't afford to pay taxes on.

I usually expect a little over 50 cents per gram, you can find exact figures for calculation in this thread:
http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/canadian-duty-taxes-of-mail-orders/page/2
and what to do if they get it wrong:
drezz01:

All-in-all the biggest hastle was just figuring out the process for reassessment and needing to walk the clerk from Canada Post through their job. If this happens any of you fine folk, just tell the clerk that they are to write your telephone number down on Form E14 - CBSA Postal Import Form (though I was never actually contacted by the CBSA) and have it sent to the CBSA for reassessment (as per these instructions on the CBSA website).

Thanks for all the recommendations... I had a small list myself of stuff that I read good things about and quite a few are on Frozenchurchwarden's list. Now I have to narrow down to 2-3 to add to my order. :)
Though what's available in 2oz bulk will likely shorten the list for me. Like I said, I gave away a bunch of aromatics, which wasn't bad because bought the 2oz size, if it was a full tin, I'd be a bit more annoyed. :D
Frog Morton's Cellar and On the Town, have been on the top of my list for months. 4Noggins only sells the 100g tins though... rather the smaller one, but, if I buy elsewhere, by the time I pay duty, I'd be paying the same as the 100g tin. I'd buy local, but wow, price jumps way up... $9 tin of Old Dublin is $29 here.

@Frozenchurchwarden - I've read on here that buying from other sites in the USA, you always get hit with tax/duty. But no one ever seems to get dinged when buying from 4Noggins. Maybe if you buy a lot it raises a flag?
My orders have always been under $60 excepting when I bought my Stanwell Pipe. Otherwise, I'll buy maybe 4 x 2oz samples, and a few small items like pipecleaners and mints. Maybe if I made a $200 tobacco order I'd get hit with duty?

How's Three Nuns? My friend keeps mentioning it, because I think his Grandfather smoked it. Says it's dark fired, and something about Brazilian Lights... not sure what category of smoke that falls into, but, been around a while and never hear much about it.
Downside though is so far, most of the blends, tins only... Three Nuns included. :S

throb', the options are vast. However, clearly you are trending toward non-aromatics. I don't want to steer you toward anything too high-test in terms of strength or nicotine, since you have to explore those options (perhaps in small samples) on your own. A few delicious English and burley blends you might try, in small quantities, are Nat Sherman 536 (pricey but worth it); Frog Morton original; CD Old Joe Krantz bulk burley blend; and McClellands bulk Virginia 5100. Enjoy wandering through the tobacco pages of our sponsor retailers and read about the different blends that share some of the tobaccos of the blends you already like. For right now, I think you might like to stay with non-aromatics.

4noggins is the only place I've ever ordered from. Not for any particular reason other than that it's where I started out. As a Canuck I've always kept my orders to 4 tins or 200 grams.
A good dark fired is McBaren Old Dark Fired. In the tin it's a flake but they sell the ready rubbed version in bulk if you'd fancy trying that.
