Lately I've been hearing from a singer-songwriter David Rawlings who does lively vocals with acoustic guitar. He does a novelty song called (I think) "Candy." "Who's that coming down the aisle/ Is it Candy?" A sequence of verse phrases, with lively elaborate guitar and fiddle work between the witty questions that change the Candy from a bride, to literal candy, to double entendre candy, and so on. Just fun and with beautiful guitar riffs. He does much else.

I was listening to my digital LP of Liszt's "Les Preludes" with the CSO conducted by Sir Georg Solti, and was reminded of my Saturday mornings, in the early 1950s, watching "Flash Gordon" on TV, with Buster Crabbe as Flash and Charles Middleton as Ming the Merciless. I had the first of my pre-pubescent crushes on Dale Arden (Jean Rogers) and Princess Aura (Priscilla Lawson).
Here's the source of the theme music used in the 1936 movie serial. The last three minutes of this 15 minute piece are blazing; pump up the volume.

After a long and very stressful day (injured pet/missed work/emergency vet visit/surgery and emotionally taxing events), I packed in my MM cob full of C&D Pirate Kake and turned to Dean Martin radio station on Pandora to find his version of “Volare” and it made me feel better.

Doobie Brothers concert at Santa Barbara concert. I long dismissed them as only pop, but now I find a multi-layered complexity as well, rendering a consistently ebullient tone.

Doing my teenage years in Austin during the ‘70s I was into all of those. Everything coming out of Compass Point was top notch. Robert Palmer with Dony Wynn hit it best for me.

Really wish Adrian Belew had done more work with Talking Heads. Zappa, Bowie, Byrne and then 80's King Crimson. He was on a roll.

    Great choices.

I lean towards the heavy end of the musical spectrum, but currently I've been bouncing between "Rivers of Nihil-Where Owls Know My Name" and "Sturgill Simpson-A Sailor's Guide to Earth"
