I thought this might be an interesting thread

As for me, I love spending the time with a new blend, finding that I enjoy it, and then taking my sweet time to really get to know the flavors in it. Picking out the various components, learning the blend’s smoking cadence, etc. Curling up with it like a good book, and finding that it quickly becomes a reliable friend.

This is my single-most favorite thing about pipe smoking.

I’d love to read everyone’s responses!

“Well, I can’t cure death. This is bad, Morty. You’re trapped in a dead man. Listen, if the situation keeps darkening, do yourself a favor and pop by Pirates of the Pancreas. Obviously I’m biased, but I think it’s great, Morty. It’s a bunch of *belches* pirates running around a *belches* pancreas. We don’t whitewash it, either, Morty. I mean, the pirates are really rapey.” - Rick & Morty

The conscious act of resting. I work in a stressful environment and I often forget to relax. Even tv doesn’t cut it for me anymore. Yet the act of loading a pipe, lighting it, and finding a rhythm is sublime.

It's meditative. I love pipe smoking for the same reason I love shining my shoes and mowing my yard: it's enough of an activity to keep me occupied, but it's not so complicated as to keep my mind from wandering.

    Oh, and it tastes great.

After almost thirty years, I'm certainly no hobbyist I'm just a smoker. That being said, my favorite thing would have to be restoring old pipes to active service.

I love the whole ritual of selecting a pipe, choosing the right tobacco, loading the bowl carefully, then lighting and enjoying a nice smoke.

Recluse, you hit it on the head. Pipe smoking makes me SLOW DOWN so I can appreciate life, being happy where you are, who you are and what you have.

All of it. Every single thing about it.

I knew from a very young age that I wanted to smoke a pipe and at the very first opportunity I bought a pipe.

    Never looked back.

    All of it.

Relaxation and escape from thinking about work.

The history of tobacco blends and pipes and the people who smoked them.

The great and voluminous tobacco flavors and aromas.

Sensory pleasures of taste, fragrance, tactile on mouth and hands, the ritual and rhythm, the culture of history and tradition, the sociability, and meditative frame of mind, and the relaxation. Those are at least some of the pipe smoking "favorite things." The visual pleasures of shape, design, materials.

One of my hobbies is scratch building rubber powered balsa airplanes. I especially like the WWII birds. I can sit at my building desk for literally hours on end and having a pipe in my mouth as I work keeps the nicotine habit fed without getting smoke in my eyes and no need for an ashtray. It also reminds me to get up and stretch once in a while if I lose track and have to relight.

Oh yeah, I really like the taste too

It's hard to say what my "single most" favorite thing is. I have a few. Mainly, the relaxation it gives me. The comforting feel of a warm briar in my hand, the scent of the tobacco wafting up from the bowl, the flavors within a blend. If I'm stressed, it gives me peace. If I'm at peace, it adds to that peace.

Also, sometimes when I'm smoking a pipe, the pipe fairies will come out of hiding and sit on my shoulders where they also will smoke a pipe. They tell me stories of the fairy world, and the goings on there, and about fairy life in general. They'll tell jokes, talk about sports... Acorn Tackle Toss is a favorite of theirs, and humming bird racing. They also like to sing. Four of them are in a barbershop quartet together. You should hear them harmonize!

I do it because all the other kids on the playground are doing it. Seriously, I do it for the smoke, appreciation of a fine pipe, finding the flavors of a blend and relaxing. I also have made plenty of lifelong friends who are amazing people! I also enjoy the stories and jokes that come from a group of degenerates smoking together.

I like the ceremony of stopping the pipe, and then I completely relax while smoking the pipe.

Slowing down. Relaxation. The routine of packing, lighting, tamping, and breath. The aroma & taste. That occasional 'Perfect Bowl' when everything is just right. Like hitting the sweet spot driving a golf ball off the tee, or hitting a baseball pitch perfectly off your bat, in younger days.

It's tricky for me to single out a favourite thing because I just love smoking my pipes but if pushed, and if you would grant me a little leeway in my reply then I would say it's opening and trying a new tin of tobacco. I feel like I still learn something about tobacco with every new tin but there is something about the excitement I feel when ordering, opening, smelling and smoking a tin of something I have never tried. It really stirs a feeling in me that is akin to the excitement of Christmas morning as a small child and it's a feeling I had long since forgotten until I took up the pipe. As I get older I find it hard to find excitement in things so I enjoy it when I can.

I can't pick just one. It's a tie between the color it makes my teeth or the way it makes me smell.

Like Javan, all of the above, well almost all. It's the enjoyment of the taste while gazing at the birds flitting about. Enjoying the look of the pipe, the smell of the scent of the tobacco blend, the thought of not being at work, not doing anything at that moment other than enjoying the relaxation

Smoking in general is fun to me; pipe smoking is my favorite form of the activity, the most relaxing. I like my mind set when the pipe is going. I'm more about thinking things through than rushing to quick resolution. Still ...

Wait for it ... no surprise, nicotine.

    Me, too.

What I love the most has changed since when I first started smoking
I used to love the ritual of picking my tobacco smelling it, loading my pipe, pouring a drink, turning on the tv and smoking.
Now I find that the best part of smoking a pipe is smoking a pipe. Many times just alone in the man cave, tv off, some music playing in the background and perhaps a cognac if the mood should strike me.
I think it’s the time spent thinking to myself that I appreciate the most. Weird huh?

    Keep calm...smoke a pipe.

Briar of course. The pipe fairies sprinkle them with dust at night to make them smoke better.

    You're smoking tobacco, right?
Of course I am... but I might add, make sure you folks are cleaning those estate pipes very well before smoking. One can never be too careful!

The pipe fairies are real, folks. You just don't see them because you refuse to believe... kinda like elves, and unicorns. They're there for those with eyes to see if you simply believe.

    I like your answer Anthony!
Thank you! I'm glad someone other than myself appreciates the pipe fairies.

My favorite device for meditative retreats into myself when I sit looking out a window or seated at the picnic table in the summer. I'd feel naked without it.

There is no beauty without some strangeness in proportion.
