If you think about age... It really means nothing... after the age of 14-16, your already driving. When I was 19 in Wyoming, you could drink... So I had privilege given, taken away and given back several times...

After 21, it's all another day... Kind of like the movie "Ground Hogs Day' with Bill Murray...

36 But after you hit the legal drinking age (depending on when you grew up) there are only really two days that you look forward to, your wedding day and the day your mother-in-law passes away.

My live-in girlfriend, pseudo-wife, (Laura) is doing her MBA, which means so am I, except I don't get the piece of paper at the end.

One of her classes is statistics. Here is what we have so far in this thread:

    PipesMagazine.com Members Age Statistics:

    Average 44
    Median 43
    Mode 36
    Minimum 19
    Maximum 67
    Count 22

Median is the middle of the group.

Mode is the most frequent value in a group of values. So here, more people reported they are 36 than any other age.

The youngest member is 19 and the oldest is 67.

    22 people reported their age.

This is actually good information for potential advertisers. I put up a survey last year, but we didn't have enough participation to get anything out of it.

I feel ya there Kevin. My wife left a cushy corporate job to return to school for a Masters in Teaching with an emphasis in history. So I now feel fully prepared to apply classroom theory and educate our yutes about the past.

On the other hand she did much of her work online and I work at home when not on the road. So she overheard much of my business day and is likely fairly well qualified to lead a catastrophe insurance claims operation for a major insurer!

Also, the stats are indeed interesting. Pretty age diverse group.

Just a tad shy of 58. I feel like 68 but that's mainly because I still "think" around 38. "Well sure dear I can get those two cord of wood moved up here closer to the house. Should be able to get it done before dinner." (pant, puff, wheeze...)

Good to have fresh ideas and outlooks from the younger folks. Just look at the way pipes have evolved away from the staid classic shapes, to the freehands and shapes that reflect nature, to stuff that's darn near asymmetrical -- all reflecting evolving artistic tastes. And all that since the late sixties. I have to chuckle when I look at my rack of bent bulldogs.

I think tobacco has changed a lot too, due perhaps to changing marketing forces created by the internet (which I think is dominated by folks a couple decades younger than myself.) And then there are new developments in processing too. Take, for example Cajun Black, which McClelland describes as

Cajun Black is the first new pipe tobacco component in more than forty years. It starts as Virginia seed, grown in Kentucky. Then smoked and finally pressed and cured in barrels the same as Perique tobacco.

I've got a tin of Royal Cajun Dark, but I'll have to wait a while before openning yet another tin... too many leftovers lying around right now.
The involvement of the younger crowd can only help the development of both pipes and tobacco, Iowa cob nose-warmers nothwithstanding.
    (I couldn't resist the dig.

Good insight Cortez. I do believe we are in the Golden Age of pipe tobacco now. Probably for cigars as well. I can't afford cigars though..

Danish I believe what you say about kids keeping us young. My 2 sons have done that for me. I have always tried to keep up with them. Whether it was soccer, skateboarding, baseball , surfing, or whatever. I always wanted to be right in there with them. They seemed to appreciate that.

    Again I'm 41...

I first tried a pipe when I was about 19 (Small meerschaum with some type of house blend) and it was TO MUCH work, plus I had no one to turn to for "help" per say...

I didn't take it back up until I was 30 or 31... My life got busy working too many jobs and again just until VERY recently I started again…

The PITA factor in pipe smoking does seem to "select" for people in certain situations, or with life styles that can accomodate the extra effort required. So I think your on-again-off-again experience is common; but it seems that once the seed is planted, it takes root and blossoms, even if later in life.

Great insight there. I was turned on to pipe smoking after a few years of rolling my own cigarettes. It really does take a certain type of person to stick with it. Indirectly for me, the seed was planted through RYO. For me RYO was a trial and error process, and once I'd realized pipe smoking had so much to offer as far as artisan tobaccos, you'd better believe I was grateful I had the internet as resource for learning! It was like having a shortcut to enjoying something at the potential it had, which I didn't really have as far as RYO goes. (At least in the late 90's)

I'm 52, my mechanic thought I was 40 the other day. (Kevin don't count me twice.)
I told him he needed glasses.

One of the main attraction aside from the obvious pleasantries associated with pipe smoking.
The sheer inconvenience of a pipe really appeals to me.
The pipe (for me) harkens back to simpler times.
As for RYO's mine come out looking like something that could get me arrested.
Besides cigarettes are just to convenient, like too many other things, just too damn convenient these days.

Ok, the first statistical snapshot from people reporting their age in this thread was as follows:

    Old PipesMagazine.com Members Age Statistics:

    Average 44
    Median 43
    Mode 36
    Minimum 19
    Maximum 67
    Count 22

Median is the middle of the group.

Mode is the most frequent value in a group of values. So here, more people reported they are 36 than any other age.

The youngest member is 19 and the oldest is 67.

    22 people reported their age.

    -------------------------------------

When we increased from 22 people reporting to 30 people, the stats changed to a lower average, but a higher mode, from 36 to 41.

Average age went down from 44 to 43.2.

    New PipesMagazine.com Members Age Statistics:

    Average 43.2
    Median 41.5
    Mode 41
    Minimum 19
    Maximum 67
    Count 30

Median is the middle of the group.

Mode is the most frequent value in a group of values. So here, more people reported they are 41 than any other age.

The youngest member is 19 and the oldest is 67.

    30 people reported their age.

I guess this will all change when we "add" another year?

I would have to say that in our 40's is when we all kind of "GET IN THE GROVE" of life... Know what we want/where to be... Even if we aren't there yet... We have "OUR PURPOSE"...

    Word!

I'm only about 3 years in....but so far I dig my forties. Obviously we all tend to get wiser as we experience more and that's the cool part of getting older. But at this point in my life I feel experienced enough to have figured out most of the game and young enough to still play it to its fullest.

Of course the over 50 folks are probably saying to themselves..."yeah whatever youngster you ain't figured out nothin' yet". :>)

I’m growing older but not up and the big 40 is only a base hit away for me. Honeslty I’m really looking forward to reaching that landmark. I agree with Jonesing that there are somethings I have fully figured out but still look forward to all the experiances of learning about the ones I don’t.
