Clark Gable killed mens' undershirt sales for years when he took off his dress shirt in a movie and wasn't wearing one.
What celebrity, male or female, could spike sales of tobacco pipes and pipe tobacco by appearing in a movie or on TV
smoking a pipe? You can come up with better, but to get it started, I'll say Michael Jordan, Hillary Clinton, and Keith
Richards (if he could convince people it was tobacco, which is unlikely). Who are your candidates?

Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp both have huge influences over fans.

    Hugh Hefner.

Johnny Depp rolls his own with some interesting condiment ingredients mixed in. A pipe seems the next natural step.

If Robert Downey Jr. publicly and seriously picked up pipe-smoking, we'd see a few things going out of stock online within a week.

Hillary Clinton spiking pipe sales? Seriously? I'll admit that her husband spiked cigar sales but doubt Hillary smoking a pipe would make any men want to run out and get one.

Reese Witherspoon on the ladies side of the ledger and Hugh Jackman on the men's side are my choices.

RDJ is such a celeb, but not a huge change from the Sherlock Movies.
Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels), also, not much effect on most viewers.

The problem with both, is they're period pieces. We need someone in a Modern day film smoking a pipe, and the whole time too.

    Candidates?

George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio (He did in Django Unchained, btw, which was excellent. But again, period piece), Daniel Craig, Nathan Fillion, Mark Wahlberg, others?

So, is Kevin gonna contact all the the candidates?!

    +1 to Hugh Jackman

Let's be serious here. If we're talking a full on pipe smoking revolution it would be Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z, to go with the suit and tie concept.

I'd have to agree with Johnny Depp. I have to say I was surprised by the mention of JT and Jay-Z, but I have to agree.

As a curve ball, I think if Neal Caffrey (the character on White Collar played by Matt Bomer) picked up the pipe it'd spike an interest. He already has the suave Rat Pack vibe going on. A pipe would seem natural for the character.

I'm with Andrew. Being that I'm young, hip, and in the know (), I can tell you with authority that the number of pipe smokers would grow to extraordinary proportions if Jay-Z OR Justin Timberlike publicly smoked a pipe.

    Okay, I will play.
Mind you this is from a 55 year old Lady, here it goes:
    Johnny Depp
    Robert Downey Jr.
    George Clooney
    Al Pacino
    Anthony Hopkins
    Sean Connery
    Robert De Niro
    Liam Neeson
    Mickey Rourke
    Dustin Hoffman
    Clive Owen
    Clint Eastwood
    Daniel Craig
    Colin Firth
    Colin Farrell
    Ed Harris
    Gary Oldman
    Benicio Del Toro
    Denzel Washington
    Bruce Willis
    Russell Crowe
    Djimon Hounsou-Gladiator movie, among others.
Just a few that I can think of right now.
Mind you I am not mentioning the good oldies.
Ron Howard, it does not work at all.
And as pylorns has mentioned the younger ones that would appeal to certain age groups.
The Hip Hop and other music genres, would be a good draw ( no pun intended ).
Keith Richards, Yuk!!! that is one ugly dude, I do like the Stones older music though.
I would be interested to know what Ladies the men here would like to see smoking a pipe, for real not just for show.

I don't know if Jordan is a regular pipeist, but he does enjoy cigars. That pipe looks small, but keep in mind he's a HUGE guy.

Costner with the Devil Anse role sparked a lot of interest here, but mainly cause of the pipe. He smoked one in JFK, as well.

@zekest: Obama Senior smoked a pipe. Get this pic on the networks, stat!

Ok, drop Hillary, at least for guys -- she's got tremendous pull among women, even many who don't subscribe to
her politics. It's odd what moves people, not always who you'd think. People respond to a certain amount of
authority or experience as much, or sometimes more than, a jazzy young hip person. Like, Oprah would move
a lot of women. Maya Angelou would rock a lot of academics and intellectual folks. Drew Barrymore might now
have the seniority to move some younger women. Any of the living former first ladies. Maggie Smith. Judy
    Dench.

For guys maybe Leno, Letterman, John Stewart or Colbert, more out of familiarity (for their audiences) than respect
per se. Any of the various generations of Saturday Night Live castes. Jerry Seinfeld. The Big Bang Theory actors,
for the nerd-hip-nonconformity folks. The Apple, Microsoft, and other silicon CEO's could pull people into piping
and play down their image as billionaire sharks (although that has a certain illusive charm, the shark image, among
    many who aspire).

Lots of possibilities here, people. Probably none of these click with many of you, but there's room to explore.

    Harrison Ford

    Denzel Washington
Will Smith - looked good smoking a cigar in Independence Day, so I think he could make the change
Sean Connery - didn't he smoke a pipe in the beginning of 007 movies?
    Robert Downey Jr.

Diane Keaton (Annie Hall) - the more I think about it, she would be my first choice.

Unfortunately, all of these names are wishful thinking although fun. If any of these well known and respected people ever took up smoking a pipe they would most likely lose fans. However, if these same celebrities were seen smoking cigarettes in the magazines (People, US or any other fan magazine) or on-line the men would probably be better off smoking a pipe.

It would take a plethora of celebrities all in concert to have any affect on getting people to take up the pipe. They would have to make a pipe smoking movie starring the days biggest celebs to make a dent. It took Tom Cruise and Paul Newman and the movie the Color of Money to make playing pool popular again. There was a boom because of the movie and the industry grew incredibly fast because of it. The same kind of thing would have to happen if pipes were to become more popular.

Interesting discussion, but in reality I doubt that other than in an acting role any of the contenders would likely be seen in public smoking, unless it was in a bad way.

By the way, undershirt sales rocketed again after Marlon Brando's appearance in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Also I have to add that as seeing how difficult it is to obtain some tobacco's would we really want it to be that much more popular?

+1 Perique that would be awesome. I would say Sean Connery but that photo already exists, unfortunately I think if modern celebrities started pipe smoking all it would cause is a quick spike in sales and go right back to what it is at. I think it would just have a Lord of the Rings effect and while yes we did get some new permanent smokers from the movie, we also saw a quick surge in churchwardens and then its over. I'm not trying to be negative, but more realistic, plus I don't think I can picture modern celebrities with pipes.

@Plateauguy - I find her SOOOO attractive and that picture just cemented my opinion of her.

GUYS/GALS - WHY would we want pipe tobacco and pipe sales to spike??? I thoroughly remember when I dipped my toes into cigars. I got a good comfort level for them when I was in the USMC and then after getting discharged the whole industry went crazy. Cigars that I paid $5 for were now at $12, if you could find them. This lasted for almost a decade. We already can't keep Penzance on the shelves for more than 10 min with just around. Imagine what would happen to prices, out of stock orders, decreases in quality, and a number of other issues if this came to fruition.

I say SHUSH IT and lets keep this to ourselves

yaza, good point. I hope this is just a fantasy game. If masses of folks descend upon our pipe shops and web sites,
the prices will double, the tax man will follow for sure, and the pleasure of being one of the brave and the few will evaporate.
So maybe this thread should be, celebrities to keep away from pipes. I think Morgan Freeman worries me most. And he
may already own that pipe he's smoking in the movie. Uh-oh.

So which celebrities do we definitely want to keep away from pipes?

I'm amazed no one has mentioned Jodie Foster. Not only is she a talented actress, but is college educated--in English--and is a genuine intellectual, stereotypically the province of pipe smokers.

I'm betting that a lot of those mentioned above have smoked a pipe of something more than once or twice. More than a few probably travel with a full smoking kit, less smoking material. That is purchased from hotel staff or other known contact. Am I being a bit too cynical?

    Guys,

Several have asked why we want pipe / tobacco sales to spike. Simple economics. If there is a sudden increase in demand, then the price will immediately increase. Therefore the margins will increase. Other vendors will notice and join the market or increase production. This will increase competition and therefore supply and probably quality. As sales go up, perhaps perception will change. More people will try the pipe or switch from cigarettes. There will be medical studies / insurance policy changes that favor pipes. Possibly even the government will become less hostile if enough voters are smoking pipes.

OK class is dismissed. Be sure to read chapter 7 of your textbook. There will be a pop quiz at the beginning of next class.

This is an easy one. Who has influenced more sales on books, clothing, vacations, music and people's reputations? The Oprah

Jodie Foster was terrible in Silence of the Lambs. I had to shut it off after twenty minutes of her. I saw Red Dragon first and for the entire twenty minutes of Jodie Foster's horrid attempt at a southern accent and bad delivery in Silence of the Lambs I was thinking to myself, "Edward Norton was so much better.".

I hope you mean the Duchess of Cambridge flaky, seeing topless photos of the Duchess of Cornwall aka Camilla Parker-Bowles would be a little too much to bear.

LOL! Thinking about it, if any celeb could be of influence it would be HRH William Duke of Cambridge. I can picture the Duke and Duchess strolling a park pushing a pram with a Dunhill billiard stuck in his smilling gob.

Prince Charles might actually discourage pipe smoking. He's had such a downbeat career, his efforts at activism,
his public and disheveled private life, and now his accession late in retirement age, if ever. Charles smoking a pipe
might move piping to dark sequestered places. Unless he abdicated in favor of his son William, and cultivated a
dapper image as a globetrotting royal without portfolio. Then he might have a jaunty aplomb. Public image is
often counterintuitive. A pipe might perk up his restless, slightly downtrodden and peevish look.

Sir Ian McKellen was enough to get me interested in pipes.

If you got Joe Manganiello or Steven Moyer from "True Blood" to smoke a pipe you'd probably drive up sales pretty significantly. I think the way to kill sales is to have the women from "The View" or Hoda and Kathy Lee advocate it.

Barbara Walters and a pipe wouldn't be a good match. Bob Costa, not so much. Wolf Blitzer, no. Ben Berneke, maybe.
Paul Volker, A-OK. Coke Roberts, with a cob, it could work. Dr. Phil, probably not. Merle Haggard, perfect.

    +1 winton.

I'd have to say that Kevin Costner as Devil Anse, and Robert Downey Jr. Have already done quite a bit for the piping community, as did the whole LOTR cast! If some of these guys actually did take it up, outside of acting, it would definitely boost piping and our cause!

Denis Leary, if you could get him to smoke a pipe and turn into a gentleman (dress nice, groom, speak like one), I guarantee you the entire world will talk about it.

In the meantime, I will show you a skit he did on his opinions of how low the coffee industry has sunken. When I ask for black coffee with nothing in it and get people looking at me like I have two heads (you mean people drink it that way?) I can definitely relate to his sentiment.
