Okay gang, thanks to a generous friend I'm doing another tasting. This time its Gallager's War Horse. This bar is reputed to be EXTREMELY high in Nicotine. If you love Lady N and need your ass kicked, well, this is the tasting for you.

If you don't handle nicotine well or don't feel like laying on your puke drenched flooring, then avoid this.

I'll open this up to ten tasters. If you've done this before, you know the drill. Send me a PM with your address. I do not keep addresses, so if you think I have it, I don't.

Here's a link to tobacco reviews that discuss the blend. I love PipeStud's take.

    http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/1271/gallaher-limited-war-horse-bar

The bar came to me as hard as a brick. I am rehydrating it (plus one more that's on the way) so nothing will be shipped for a week or two.

So let's do this. Post your review or obituary and see who the last victim taster standing is.

    Let the games begin.

Man, I can’t wait! The one I tried from the 80’s (I think it was) definitely did not have the imprinted name in the plug. I think that is so cool.

Is that just a tin foil wrapper that was on it?

Yeah, definitely a rehydration project but one worth doing for a chance at smoking a piece of Irish history.

I'm ordering some of the SToP stuff to compare versions. Definitely a rare chance to compare a re-release with the real deal.

As a matter of interest Decimalisation came to Uk in Febuary 1971 and the price 34 1/2p is post decimal,so not quite as old as you think.
However a very good experiment anyway

Same. I don't smoke it that often, but there's really nothing else like it. I sometimes mix it with a little bit of brown rope -- kicks up the nicotine and the nasty/earthy tobacco flavor. (I'm weird, I know.)

Gents, having just rehydrated a similar War Horse plug I can tell you that this stuff is killer. I made the mistake of loading a full bowl and payed the price. A Group 1 or 2 will suffice in giving you a kick-ass smoke. Any larger and it will be at your peril. Good luck and make sure you have a full stomach.
Having been involved with the development of the "new" War Horse you will find the older bar to be more Lakeland in taste and aroma. Very similar to Condor plug but with way more oomph. Lady N brings the hammer with the original.

    Blowin' smoke since 1970.

Good to know about the vitamin N potency. I'll be using a small bowl Scottie Peirsel pencil shank to try this.

Curiously only 2 nights ago I met a fellow pipe smoker for the first time(he is on holiday here in Greece from Glasgow Scotland)
We talked about pipes and he said his late father was also a pipe smoker and smoked only Condor Twist and War Horse bar.
He is a St Bruno man and was quite surprised when I talked about estate pipes and people collecting them.
I guess he is like the typical US codger smoking an OTC blend in the same pipe all day

Hydration Update: The Bar on the left currently weighs 24 grams. The bar on the right, just went into the re-hydration bin and it currently weighs 22 grams. I didn't state it earlier but the bar on the left started at 22 grams as well.

Why do I suddenly get the sense that these plugs were the prototype for the nuclear rods used in certain reactors...?

I would never have guessed the size would change like that! Wow.

My experience with the War Horse Bar from the 80’s (Simon, correct me if I’m wrong on the date) was that it was a lot like Condor without the famous Condor sauce. I would also say that it was very similar in strength to Condor Plug in terms of nicotine. I didn’t detect much of any topping so I’m tickled to hear that it will be perceptible in this older version. In fact, I really did wonder if War Horse was just the same Plug as Condor without the famous Condor scent added.

Those plugs look beautiful, ash, thanks for posting them!

By the early 1980s I tend to think that Gallaghers was doing a bit of badge engineering and that Condor Plug and War Horse were pretty much the same thing and they had defanged it so to speak. The same thing happened to Wills Woodbine cigarettes, Senior Service and Capstan Full Strength when they stopped using 'Empire Grown' tobacco and substituted Virginia. The old brands you were lucky if you could inhale the first three puffs of a Woodbine without your head spinning. The same with Players, Park Drive and Players Weights and then they switched away from 'Empire Blends' and everyone seemed to be able to inhale non stop. I have often thought there might be a correlation between smoking the modern stuff and some of the lung diseases that seem to afflict modern day cigarette smokers. Maybe its the environment? Who knows but I can count on both hands the number of Woodbine smokers in my family that have all died at a ripe old age. Go figure!

I just finished dinner and I'm going to load my pipe and give this a go. I have a sweet drink, a barf bag and pillows spread across the ground.
