Was going through my old pipes, and found this odd pipe. It's carved as a bust of Beethoven. It is a very light colored wood, stamped Bruyere, France, and also has the Wally Frank stamp on it. Was wondering if anyone has any info on the maker, if the wood is briar, etc... I'll get pics up ASAP.

Thanks.

Does anyone have any info or had any experience with Wally Frank pipes? Google says they were an american brand out of New York from the '30s. Not sure when they stopped making pipes.

Sure, Wally Frank was a big mail order pipeshop for years and years. They didnt make pipes, but they contracted and sold pipes under the Wally Frank brand for years. They mostly sold good to very good quality pipes under the Wally Frank brand.

Figural pipes were pretty popular in the past, i dont know what years they made most of them but I'm guessing by the 1970's there weren't a lot of them being carved anymore.

If its French, it was almost certainly carved in St. Claude France, no telling what pipemaker actually carved it though.

As for value, they are probably worth more than most people are willing to pay, they're just not very collectible these days. If its well carved, you might pay $50-$75 on Ebay for one, but then you might get one for $25 another day.

Should be a fine pipe though, enjoy it. (and Bruyere is just the fancy-ass French way of saying Briar)

I dont believe Wally Frank ever had a connection to S.M. Frank other than carrying those pipes in the Wally Frank catalog.

Wally Frank was just a chain of stores that ran a large Catalog/Mail order business.

Heres one of their catalogs from 1939

Thanks! I'll get pics up when I can...it is a good rendition of Beethoven, although a pipe of Beethoven does seem a bit odd.

I have 22 of them, I like most of them. WF was not too careful about his drilling, but other than that the are fine.

I like mine lonestar, hell they were made all over the place, England, France, Italy and the USA and no telling how many different companies in each country.

I have 2 Wally's - overall they are decent smokers. I am particularly fond of a Donkey Nut shape I got off ebay - a while back.

Lots of WF catalogs at the bottom of the page, maybe you can find the original price of your pipe.

The pipe listed as "underslung" is a very neat design ( http://pipepages.com/wfpp8.htm ). Does anyone here have one?
