I think that I started to smoke Virginias and Burleys when I still was smoking the hell of pipe at a rate of 60 puffs a minute, and drawing the flame of my lighter all the way to the stem. So, I blame the tobacco for my mistakes. So I decided to change to English blends and of course by the time I started with them I was already beating the learning curve and then I said wow now we are talking. However, before trashing the tobacco I commented her what to do with that diabolic Virginia and that mad biting dog Burley, and the savvy comments from the experts on this forum talked me into another ideas. So I gave them a try with another set of mind and better smoking techniques and, and guess what I liked it. So, I would like to ask for advice on great only Virginia blends and also Virginia and Perique blends (i have heard that this combo virginia/perique is awesome)
    Thank you.

Orlik golden sliced is a very good virginia to start with, that was my first virginia that i fell in love with, be warned, some pipes definitely smoke it better than others. Also i wouldnt smoke it out of one of the pipes youve smoked englishes out of because the latakia will linger for a good 5- 10 bowls, and you will be unhappy, maybe try it in a cob or a clay

Rattray's HOTW, is a great Va/Per to try. I really like it, and it is usually readily available.

Va/Per I am a fan off Mac Baren HH Acadian Perique

And for Virginia only blend I love the Mac Baren HH Matured Virginia.

Oh and another favorite Viriginia is the McClelland Christmas Cheer releases.

McClelland's Aged Virginias blends are an excellant series. Mixes of reds, blacks, and brights, coarse cut or crumbled flake, make for an enjoyable experience. They are very well done.

Mr. Pease has some great blends in his Fog City series. My favorite is Telegraph Hill, which is a great Va/Per to try. I also enjoy Union Square. which is a striaght up Va. Both of these are worth checking out.

The home page of LuxuryTobaccoReviews.com has the major tobacco categories listed in the left hand column. That's a great organizing tool, and good place to start.

    Virginias, eh?

McCranie's Red Ribbon, SG Best Brown Flake and Hartwell Signature are all favorites of mine.

Rattray's HOTW, is a great Va/Per to try

Have they changed HotW? The tin description on the tin sitting in my "I'm gonna open this soon" box says "A pure Virginian tobacco of a most unusual share of strength". I certainly don't recall any perique in Hal.

A good place to start with Virginia tobaccos are with McClelland #5100 Red Cake, a light, mild, sweet Virginia that's easy to smoke and very user friendly.

There seems to be a lot of debate or disagreement about Perique being in HOTW, and I really don't kknow how it all got started. I don't think it has much in it myself, but it's supposedly there. Check out these links: http://www.kohlhase-tobacco.com/site/index.php?id=158
and http://luxurytobaccoreviews.com/t/rattrays-hal-o-the-wynd. All I can say is if it doesn't have it in it, there are a lot of people saying it does, if I'm wrong, my bad, but it is still a wonderful tobacco, and I highly recommend it.

The Kohlhase site states that HOTW has both Perique and Kentucky.
But like Mark says, if it tastes good, who cares what anybody says?

Rattray's Hal O' The Wynd is one of my all time favorites. It does have a touch of Perique in it, but only as a spice and not really detectable. I believe if it was removed the blend would be diminished.

The other of my "all time favorites" is G.L. Pease Haddo's Delight it does have a generous helping of Perique... Not too much... Just right. good stuff.

Currently, my favourite Virginia is Samuel Gawith's Best Brown Flake, followed closely 1792 Flake. For me, St. James Flake has been a learning and taste curve requiring a bit of assistance from a tad of 1792 mixed in.

Best Brown flake is very mild

Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake is a nice one, and inexpensive, $3.65 per ounce at my local tobacconist.

Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture (#1 in my book but OOP now)
    Escudo Navy De-Luxe
McClelland Personal Reserve St. James Woods
Also, Peter Stokkebye Bull's Eye Flake is another great one.

Straight VA's, only one lives in my cellar:

The blender knows what it has, I guess - but if it's there, it's very subtle, as Lawrence said. Va/Pers and I generally do not get along, but I like Hal. (I take reviews with a grain of salt, unless I am pretty familiar with the reviewer - nothing personal against the guys who reviewed it in the link!)

@ Jud Yes, it is very subtle, and I really can't tell there is much, if any at all. I just lumped it as a Va/Per because most everything I've read about it says it has Perique in it. I do agree with you, that it is a borderline VA/Per at best, but still one fine smoke.

Solani VA flake and Reiners LGF, Marlin flake, all with a tiny pinch of perq. or burley, but all top. Also all blended in Germany I think, but all available in the US. Orlik GS I smoke everyday, superb and great value. I could go on and on here as a VA fanatic.

HOTW has red Virginia , Halfzware and just a kiss of Perique . As for me Rattrays Marlin Flake is more to my liking ,kiss of cavendish. Or if strength is your quest try Old Gowrie . The three blends are dark stoved and pressed .this takes more time and carefull effort . But the tobacco oil on the leaf through this process is what sets Rattrays apart .

Well, I'm the guy who wrote the lengthy review in that link, and I think you're wise to take reviews with a grain of salt.
If I reviewed a great blend at several different times of the year, or merely under several different conditions,
I'd end up with several different reviews. But that's just the mark of a great blend. Like a great lover, it brings
something different to the experience almost every time.
As a reviewer the most I hope for is that the reader gets some generally accurate idea of what's in the can.
There's nothing I dislike more than taking a shot in the dark at 10 bucks a pop.
