I've suggested this ebay vendor to new pipe smokers who ask "where can I get a good pipe", but never was able to win any of his auctions (forrestmatia). I persevered on this one, as the unsmoked condition and shape fired all of my pipe triggers. To this point, all of my GBD's have been well used estates, requiring a good bit of work. This one looks ready for action. We're off to FL on Wednesday, so I won't see it for about two weeks...

    Great Find....

Bring plenty of cool clothes to FL as it is already hot and very humid for this time of year.....

Nice catch! Don't you love it when you find a pipe that just talks to you, and then you win it through an auction against all odds? Hope it's as good as it looks!

The pipe was delivered when I returned from vacation last night. I'm very pleased and can now personally recommend ebay seller "forrestmattia". The pipe is just the right weight, at 50 grams and a perfect bend, by my tastes.

The pipe looked terrific. I've never restored an unsmoked estate before. The stem was unmarked, but oxidation had taken away the shine. I took the oxidation off with some 2000 wet grit paper, than the final four micromesh grades. I followed that with a very light buff with some white diamond and than plastic polish. I put on a coat of Obsidian stem oil as well. The stem really gleams and I kept all the sharp edges intact. The bowl was just waxed with some Halycon by hand.

I'm saving this one until next weekend, and it will be christened on Fathers Day with some MM965.

He usually lists his auctions on the BrothersofBriar forums, but might also post here.

THAT, my friend, is one awesome pipe !

Congratulations. enjoy that beauty on fathers day ! I'm sure you deserve it.

"The fact is, squire, the moment a man takes to a pipe, he becomes a philosopher. It's the poor man's friend; it calms the mind, soothes the temper, and makes a man patient under difficulties. It has made more good men, good husbands, kind masters, indulgent fathers, than any other blessed thing on this universal earth."

I kicked off Fathers day with some MM965 in the GBD. I had never smoked 965 in a new pipe, to this point. Wow, what a great smoking pipe. I was a little worried since I discovered it was made early in the Cadogan era, but it smokes just like my older ones, but new! I look forward to developing some cake, but the first smoke was cool, dry with a perfect draw. Plus, my wife gave me this cool hat for summer driving in the MGB. It sure was a great way to start Fathers Day.

Great looking pipe. Are GBD's all hand made? I have noticed there are many in the estate market for some rather nice prices.

Ya gotta get a picture of you in the MG with the hat on and the new pipe in your mouth, could turn into your new Avatar pic.

Some have hand-made stems, but the strummels are machine made. There may be some higher grades that are, but someone with more knowledge than I would have to answer that. Nothing I've ever read (there isn't a lot) mentions any handmade pipes. They are good deals to be had on Ebay. Watch for the pre-Cadogan era pipes as the modern pipes aren't of the same smoking qualities. USUALLY a metal rondel means pre-Cadogan but not always, as this particular pipe has the metal rondel. But is stamped in the circular "Made In London" with "England" underneath which was used after the Cadogan purchase. Post-Cadogan (1981) stamping reads "London England". I assume mine was probably a transitional piece, made in the early 80's.

Needs a re-shoot and a closer shot to still tell that's a MG, but closer to focus on you.

    Nice I like the contrast

I know what I need, smoke, I can't recall the last time I tasted it....Gandalf in the mines of Moria.

"we shall have to share pipes, as good friends must at a pinch'....'I keep a treasure or two near my skin, as precious as rings to me. Here's one: my old wooden pipe. And here's another an unused one...He held up a small pipe with a wide flattened bowl, and handed it to Gimli. 'Does that settle the score between us', said Merry. 'Most noble hobbit, it leaves me deep in your debt."

The pipe proved to be a very good smoker, no regrets on this one. It dawned on me that this was the first black Prehistoric I've seen. I have only seenbrown stain to this point.
