I purchased a Kaywoodie Hi-bowl H6 smooth on ebay last week. I was excited to see it, as I already have one in relief grain, and really enjoy the small bowl size. Here is the relief grain for reference.

I got the new H6 last night and saw that the bowl had been reamed and ruined. A straight reamer was used and the bole was enlarged nearly 3/16". It doesn't sound like much; but is the difference between getting the first section of my pinkie vs my entire index finger in the bowl.

Here are the pipes with a dime and nickel for relative hole size comparisons

Beside changing the shape of the bowl and thinning out the walls; the reamer left chatter all around the bowl. Who would do such a thing?

Is this worth salvaging or should I just return it for a refund?

The pics above are why I do not use the below reamers much. I get in trouble with them

much preferring the below.

And as others said if you dont like it dont keep it. I would say though if you got it for less than $20 it might not be worth the trouble and you have a smoker that you dont need to worry about dropping etc.
Edit so I found the ebay listing, the pic of the bowl is at an angle so its not easy to determine the condition in the pics.
And we know who restored it as "We reamed out the inside of the bowl almost to the bare wood, treated the bowl" Nothing about how we screwed it up in the process. Maybe you can get him to give you a better deal on it.

Yeah, I'd return it. Looks like it was reamed out by Homer Simpson with an auger drill.

It's an object lesson in the destructive potential of reamers. You need to learn to use them, maybe with pipes that are already discards, or by being extremely, even excessively cautious. Some Forums members don't build cake and therefore don't do reaming, or own reamers at all, relying on a thin carbon layer and wiping out a bowl after scooping out the ash, after every smoke. Many like to build cake, probably a strong majority, but at least be advised, there is an alternative. Return that pipe if you can.

Return it - if they don't accept returns file a claim as "item not as described".
