Cool tip. I was looking at that code on a recently purchased SG tin and had no idea how decipher it. Now I do.

deniz,
I was referring to the dating on Mac Baren tins. The one I'm looking at now says OCT 2016.....simple as that.

Maths was never my forte so it comes as no surprise to me that I just cannot get my head around how that dating system works.
Does anyone have a simpler explanation of those date codes?
Regards,
Jay.

December 1995 was month 001. January of '96 was month 002, Feb '96 was month 003, and every month since then went 004, 005, 006, and July of 2017 was month 260. So September the current month is 262.
Edit: I just checked a few tins and they don't all have the sticker shown in the link.

Stan, I just pulled a random tin of FVF from my box and the sticker states 10 251. If you can give me a date for that then I light be able to work out how the system works.
Regards,
Jay.

10 Oct 2016 ..... The 10 is for the day of the month. The 251 is sequential from the beginning and gives you the year at the same time. Check it with the dates I gave in the first post.

@ deniz... Yeah, I lucked out with my last tin of Cabbie's. I think it's from the month it first came out, 12 252 ... or 12 Nov 2015.

I checked all my Sam Gawith tins last night. Most don't have a five digit code of any kind. The more recent ones do. The distributor for Gawith has probably changed 3 or more times since 2004, which I think is the oldest tins I have. I did see one older tin with a sticker with the last three of a five digit code being ** 073. Which would be 2002 I guess. That would be about right for that tin.

I uNderstand that Jay I simply wonder if different distributors want different information stamped on a tin. Sam Gawith used 1995 as the starting point for dating. I wonder what significance, if any, that date had? And, why, if that is the starting point, why tins from the early 200s I have, don't have it stamped on the tin's side?

Mike, if you have tobacco dating back to the 200's then you have some seriously aged tobacco that you must tell us all how it smokes :nana:

Jay. I rarely smoke much tobacco that isn't 10 or more years old. I do try new blends on occasion. Right now, I have a tin of McClelland Va 22 open. Smooth, full bodied and well worth the wait. I also have a 2004 tin of Scottish Woods. It's ok. I now compare all Latakia blends against Legends. That is a very high bar IMHO.

I have about 15 different SG and GH tins, and only a recent Navy Flake has a number: 19 258, making it June 2017. That makes sense because I just got it, but the rest will remain a mystery.
