1. I tried to open the inside of a stem and the needle file I was using got stuck.

Heat? Oven at 200 degrees for 20 minutes?

Cold? I tried putting it in the freezer but that didn't work.

2. The briar on another pipe is very light and porous. Though I've only smoked it twice, smoke has stained the rim, and it can't be removed by saliva and rub from a cloth. Over

time a rim will darken though cleaned in this manner but this is a goo0d bit worse.
I'm thinking of a transparent coating, not a stain, for the rim only such that the deposit from the smoke can be cleaned. Recommendations?
