After doing some research I’m trying to figure out this question without confusing you along with myself, so here it goes... (I’m really not bitching either)

Altadis U.S.A has several “Black Cavendish” pipe tobaccos listed and I’m sure there is more...

    ~Super Value Tobacco Pouches: “Black”

~Midnight Smoke - An all Black Cavendish consisting of 100% fire-cured tobaccos steam sweated for mildness and smoothness.

Now, I have in my possession “Backwoods” pipe tobacco and Smoker Friendly “Classic Black” (Black Cavendish), both of these are also produced also by Altadis U.S.A.

After smoking both, each in a different pipe, they taste the same.

The “Backwoods” is a little more “ruff” cut, but the flavor/aroma is the same as the “Classic”.

So, my question is, how many “types/blends” of tobaccos are being sold under different names and packaging but “we” think we are getting something different each time?

I've been wondering the same. I've noticed some of the various tobaccos I've tried have very similar tastes and smells. I suspect every different company has their own name for the exact same blend. On the other hand.... others have a very distinct and unique smell and flavor. I'm hearing and reading a lot of terms that tell me there must be an almost infinate number of combinations of tobaccos and processing methods. Also geographic locations and altitudes must play some part as well. Here are some of those terms: aged, matured, ripe, stoved, fired, ribbon, flake, shag, plug, pressed, broken, Louisiana, Syrian, Turkey, cake, darkened, sweetened, natural, red, orange, black, casing, rum, scotch, vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, pecan, cocoa, maple, caramel, honey, fruity, Balkan, cigar leaf, navy, rubbed, ready-rubbed, hand-rubbed, wide cut, broad cut, Yenidje, cask mellowed, Acadeian, American, Cyprian, Kentuckian,
...and all the various tobacco names themselves...Virginia, latakia, oriental, perique, burley, cavendish.
I would say that, given the limitless possiblities including the effects of the other variables such as packing the bowl loose, tight, pipe shape, pipe finish, humidity, altitude, etc, we are probably limited in how much difference we can actually distinguish anyway. ....well..i'm a little tired now... but later I want to come back and give my other thoughts .... based on what someone said about the vinegar or ketchup smell from the McClellands blends.

I guess one of my points is, The "Smoker Friendly" cost me about $12.00 for a 12oz. bag, the "Backwoods" cost me $15.00 for 7 oz... Big price change for the amount.

A lot of brands have been bought up by big companies and are being produced by a limited number of blenders. I smoke Balkan Supreme by Peter Stokkebye. They also own the Balkan Sasieni name and produce that blend now. I can tell NO difference other than price in the two. Many "classics " all come from the same place now with different tins. C&D , G. L. Pease and a few other independents like pipesandcigars.com do the bulk of the true custom blends now. It's a huge change from the early 70's when I started pipe smoking.

I guess it's like buying gasoline, three companies produce it, and then sell it to others and they put their name and price on it... It gets discouraging at times, both with gas and tobacco.

    All I want is a different blend/flavor...
