Went to the Gatlin Burlier today, to have a look around and hopefully find a pipe. I found one in the style I've been looking at for a while, a meer eagle claw. They are a great bunch of folks the gentle man hooked me up with a small bag to try out of a Santa blend.

After getting back to the cabin and looking at it however I noticed what may be a small crack on the bottom. I'm gonna see if they have another when I go back up there. Does any one with more meer experience know if this area would be a high stress with this bad spot? Or do you thing it would be ok?

Hmmm, this is a bit tricky. I have a meerschaum pipe with what appears to be a hairline crack running along the shank and into the bowl, but I often wonder if the "crack" is just some kind of line in the structure of the block meerschaum or even the wax finish of the pipe. The crack or mark - whatever it is - has never worsened. Your pipe appears to have pitting. If you can return the pipe for an unflawed substitute, by all means I would do so. If you cannot make an exchange, I would just enjoy the pipe as it is. If my experience is generalizeable, the flaw will never worsen.

This is the first time I've seen the word Burlier....what city are you talking about? 8)
I can read 'tobacconist' in the pics.

I'd take it back and try to exchange it for any other pipe. Buying a good meerschaum like that is a significant investment in your pipe collection and you may regret not tending to this issue now while it is easy for you to do so. I live an hour away from the Gatlinburlier and really like their pipe tobacco blends.

I did go back over and looked at the others. Found one that was a bit more and picked it up paying the difference.

Only to get back and notice a imperfection on the bowl, we didn't see it when looking at it in the shop. Looks like a small crack, not sure how we missed it crept due to lighting.

Never had a chance to visit that place but it looks great. Every time I've been in the area either tey were closed or I couldn't make time to get there.
Nice pick-up

Flintlock thanks for noticing, I'm still not sure if that was an honest bit of joking, or a real sarcastic dig. I let it go because it was Christmas Eve. 8)

It is a nice shop, for those of you that still want to visit he said they are open to 8pm usually.
Freakiefrog I'm gonna take the new one back tomorrow, first time I've seen this many imperfections on meerschaum pipes at one time. Not knowing if the material will crack further down the road I don't want to risk it.
