Newbie and was wondering if you can help me pick a top quality loved 5 for each genre of Pipe Tobaccos to try so I can get a bearing on the different types to weed out what I like and what I don't. I know I like aromatics liquory, vanilla, honey things like that just not fruity really. Between Burley,Latakia,Virginia ect. If you'd made a custom sampler for me in the different genre of tobaccos what top 5 in each genre would u pick for me. To get a real hold on the different types. A BIG question and long to answer question I know but I would appreciate it very much.

Hi Napulitano,
First, welcome to the forums--lots of good, friendly people here with tons of info.
A very subjective question, so be sure, but here are a few you might want to consider:
Burley: Solani Aged Burley Flake, MacBaren Golden Blend, Carter Hall

English: Nightcap, Early Morning Pipe, GLP Quiet Nights

Aro: Rattray's Bagpipers Dream or MacBaren Vanilla Flake (both not fruity--mostly light toppings)

"Crossover English" (mix of English and Aromatic)--all Frog Mortons, MacBaren Plumcake, Sillem's Black

Virginia: Dunhill Flake, SG Full VA Flake, SG Best Brown Flake, Orlik Golden Sliced

Virginia//Perique (also called "VAPer"--Escudo or Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls, PS Luxury Bullseye Flake
You can go to http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/search and click on "Blend Type" and then sort them by number of reviews or average rating to find others that people like.
Finally, smokingpipes lists their top sellers in a number of ways:

In no particular order:

1. Nightcap -Latakia and more, plus nicotine

2. Escudo -Virginas and Perique

3. ERR Match - Over the counter 'flavored' Burley

4. Rattray's Marlin Flake - smooth and delicious Virginias, cavendish and perique

5. C&D Autumn Evening - a Virgina based aromatic that delivers taste and nicotine and can be added to any of your less flavored over the counter blends for both economy and variety.
I bought bulk forms of Nightcap, ErrM, & Autumn Eve..these latter two I stretch by 'blending' with any of several codger blends I keep around. CH,PA,SWR,MidTown Mid Town 'copies', and PS702.

I also dabble with cutting up cigars and using that along with AE and maybe a dab of Lat blend.

I've been smoking my pipe(s) since May of 2014, just over a year.

In the VaPer genre, my choices are:
  • Brigham Acadian Blend

    Sam Gawith Spring Time Flake

    Sillem's Councilor 1695

McClelland Collector: Beacon (or Beacon Extra for more Perique)

    Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture
...of course, things like this change from season to season, year to year.

Also, there are lots of VaPers that are seasoned with other types of leaf, not considered here.

As a full time newbie mostly-lurker, that post by pipefish is one of the most helpful things I've come across. Well done and cheers!

Glad to be of help, gentlemen; and as you can see, there are a ton of other recommended tobaccos to consider from other members.

You have some great recommendations here. Just to throw two more on the pile: Among English blends, Nat Sherman's 536 is among the most refined English blends, mild but full of flavor; and in the burley category, but a sort of outlier, I really like Semois Tobac-Manil, a Belgium variant of burley, just one kind of tobacco but totally unique. Some love it and some loath it, but if you enjoy it, it's like a blend all in one leaf.

That great thing about these threads is seeing how wildly opinions and tastes vary.
Here's what I would throw in to a custom sampler, OP
Full Virginia Flake, Medium Virginia Flake, Skiff Mixture, St James Flake, Dark Birds Eye, Grasmere or Ennerdale Flake.I choose these in part because I believe they are all currently available in bulk from P&C.
