In browsing through the Tinsky article in Pipedia, I noticed a picture of a stamp with the following:

American

Reg No_

0485/*Z 7
Now I know it's American Smoking Pipe Company, April 1985, but the *Z 7 puzzles me. Other pictures show CR (Curt Rollar) or MT (Mark Tinsky) in the stamp. Is the *Z a shape, and 7 the grading?
Anyone in the know?
Thanks

Mystery solved! I sent Mr. Tinsky an email yesterday regarding this, and he basically said that at some point he lost his MT stamps, so he began using "*Z" because it resembled how he wrote "MT" in real life (so to speak). Sounds like a personal inside joke of sorts, and a funny one. He said that Curt never lost his CR stamps, so any pipe without the CR stamps is a Tinsky. He said the 7 was a grading (and a pretty good one, he recalls).

Oh, man. I have no idea what the BFP stamp is. Please explain!

That's funny James. He told me the exact same thing when I emailed him yesterday as well. What was strange were as the different fonts used in his email to me. He must have been cutting and pasting from the email he sent to you
