I don't mean to offend anyone here, but I've noticed that it's not unusual for threads to remain in inappropriate categories. I've noticed this particularly in the General Pipe Smoking section, where we've seen entire threads devoted to a topic such as whether someone should get a dog or not, what are you drinking, and what kind of car do you drive. Don't threads like these belong in the General Discussion section, since they have nothing to do with pipe smoking?

Yet, at the same time, members are routinely chastised for not capitalizing Topic titles.

To me, I'd much rather put up with a variety of Topic styles than have to scroll through off-topic threads -- or visit them to see what, if any, actual pipe-smoking discussion is happening. It seems the preference is on the appearance of a thread rather than the content involved.

That said, I realize this is a very busy forum and it can't be easy to keep up with everything going on. But I think some members are simply in the habit of posting all of their new topics on the main General Pipe Smoking forum, whether they actually have anything to do with pipe smoking or not.

    Just my .02.

So if you see a thread you feel is in the wrong section, notify one of the mods, and they can move it. It's really simple.

Thanks, Jud! This is exactly what I was going to put!

Let us know and we'll be happy to move it. We try and catch as many as we can, but sometimes they slip past us.

I, for one, don't mind seeing the various topics on one page. It saves me from skipping all over the place. If I see a topic of interest I read it; the others I just ignore.

If you help police the threads in the wrong section often enough, you'll receive the "Junior Mod Assistant" title

But ya, it can't be easy to track all this stuff.

I would help a lot too, if we all pay better attention to the topic -- and as the OP, make the effort to place our thread where it belongs in the first place.

I believe the original threads, regardless of topic placement, all show up on the home page first anyway, and then "fall off the home page" eventually into the topic they belong (assuming the thread is actually in the topic it belongs) or am I mistaken?

If I was the sheriff there wouldn't be any threads unrelated to pipe tobacco smoking.

They do all show up on the homepage once posted, but are also always in their section. If you click on pipe talk, the pipe talk threads will be there regardless of being on the homepage.

I know that forum home page lists like the 70 most recent posts. I wish there was an option to see ALL of the posts from all of the sections on one page that will let me scroll back as far as I want to go.

Nothing after Syd Barrett went insane.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I guess I need to apologize then because I am guilty of this. Not out of laziness but because on my browser, I just click New Thread. It doesnt really ask me what forum to put it in. Sorry about that.

This may help: Think about what the general topic is that you want to create a new thread about, then check out all the topic types at the top of the PM Forums Home Page.

"AH! I want to start a topic about PIPE REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE."

OK, click on pipe repair & maintenance there and, at the bottom of that next page that pops up, create your new thread in that topic as the OP.

Oh and when you finish typing your post as the OP and create a subject, don't forget to include some "search words" at the bottom right of your new post before you click to submit it -- this will help other puffers who want to actually research a subject that may have been discussed here already before posting their own by using the forum's "search" function.

Presto, like magic, your post will end up under the correct topic.

Uh. . . Wow. Not sure what major world issues we should be discussing in a forum dedicated specifically to questions about this Web site. You don't see this as a legitimate concern regarding the Web site?

I've just discovered a point that may explain things. Since I'm fairly new here, I've only read forums and posted to them by going to the specific forums in question. For tobacco, I go to the Tobacco Discussion forum. For general pipe stuff, I go to General Pipe Discussion. But I'm seeing that others here don't work that way. They scroll down to the bottom of the Forum Home page and read by topic header. This lessens the chance that a poster will actually know what specific forum they're reading in. (I'm going to assume that's why some in this thread were baffled by my question altogether; maybe they didn't realize it was posted in a forum dedicated to PipesMagazine.com discussions.)

If people aren't going to post in the right category, the general discussion should have a longer list so people that don't visit every day can still see things without going to categories.

    Yup. That is the reason.

Personally, I rarely visit a specific forum but always go to the bottom of the main page to see recent posts. Also, the mods usually catch posts that are in the wrong place, they're usually pretty good about moving them. Overall, it doesn't bother me much because it's fairly infrequent and I am not much on following rules. That's right, I am a rebel!
