While life can be unpredictable, sweeping one into its currents, occasionally she leaves us becalmed in an eddy, with finally with time to make a post again...
Awhile back, I was introduced to an entertaining little volume of smoking prose and poetry by the name of Whifflets. It's an entertaining little volume full of all kinds of humor and cheekiness related to that activity, of which, we all heartily enjoy: Smoking. So, from time to time, I thought it might be nice to share a selection or two with my fellow lunting gentlemen of Pipesmagazine.
Today's selection: This Old Pipe
books

It's been awhile since my first sharing of Whifflets - but you can find it here: Poetic Laudation of My Personal Piping Mantra - Poetry for Pipe Smokers

There is also the free ebook "Pipe and Pouch" which may share some of the same poetry though it lacks the clever formatting. It would be nice to find a copy of either in an antique store!
Pipe and Pouch
INVOCATION TO TOBACCO

Weed of the strange flower, weed of the earth,

Killer of dullness, parent of mirth,

Come in the sad hour, come in the gay,

Appear in the night, or in the day,—

Still thou art welcome as June's blooming rose,

Joy of the palate, delight of the nose.
Weed of the green field, weed of the wild,

Fostered in freedom, America's child,

Come in Virginia, come in Havana,

Friend of the universe, sweeter than manna,—

Still thou art welcome, rich, fragrant, and ripe,

Pride of the tube-case, delight of the pipe.
Weed of the savage, weed of each pole,

Comforting, soothing, philosophy's soul,

Come in the snuff-box, come in cigar,

In Strasburgh and King's, come from afar,—

Still thou art welcome, the purest, the best,

Joy of earth's millions, forever carest.

Been working on a poem dedicated to corn cob pipes. So far, I only have one stanza, which should probably be at the end:
Without your company,

I would be forlorn.

My friend, my companion,

My sweet pipe of corn!
