What do you think of this Boswell?

I'd try and smoke it when I had a free afternoon and a Buffett of food to keep me from getting the gitters.

Noteworthy indeed. By that I mean after buying it you will need a note to remind you to get the fireplace matches relights will require.

That's just what I need for a nice month or so at home in my favorite comfy chair...just me and my new pipe, two or three tins of tobacco, an I.V. drip for fluids, a nice catheter and I'm set!

No cutter would normally make anything like that. Boswell either knows a cutter or buys whole roots, it probably takes almost an entire root to make one of those.

I'd say it's a waste of good briar.

What he said. You could buy a rack full of actually smokable pipes for that kind of money.

Do the Boswells realize or not realize that there's a certain, um, niche market for their big pipes?

Waste of briar. I am actually crying here. Might as well burn $2000.

Albert Einstein was once quoted as saying, “I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs.” One of the reasons behind this statement is that pipe smoking is meant to be a slow leisurely activity. It takes patience to smoke a pipe. Unlike cigarettes and cigars, there is a certain amount of technique to smoking a pipe. Where cigars and cigarettes can just be picked up, lit and puffed on, pipes require the development of a technique in order to get the best smoking experience.

I have 3 Boswell pipes; I love them and they're great smokers. But whenever I see their pipes page containing something like this, I cringe. Obviously each carver makes their own choices, but this to me is nothing more than a show piece for someone with money to throw away.

Does the standard 3 step method for filling a pipe still apply here? Lol.

They posted this one about 5 months ago and it sold for $800. It was less than half the size of this new one.

I'd say it's a waste of good briar.

My guess is that it wasn't really that good of briar which is why the rustication is so heavy. I'm also guessing that this pipe was made purely for the novelty pipe collector, and not actually intended to smoke. If it was really good briar then I imagine they would have made a couple pipes from that block.

A conversation piece they might sell to someone who wants a conversation piece and has that money. Meantime I bet they sell a lot of standard size pipes after attracting attention with this one.

Not rare, if you know where to get them, just really expensive.
