My good friend and neighbor had a boxer, fartiest dog I ever knew. He must have tried 50 dog foods, and in the end just lived with it. Someone else told me it is a trait of the dog.

@simenon, Rhodesian Ridgeback's are a pipe carving dog from Africa. They make a slightly curved stem, stout tapering bowl pipe. You mostly see them rusticated because of the sharp teeth, and the time used licking them smooth can be used to make the owners more pipes. I have several and once you get past the dog drool smell they smoke pretty good. Do not confuse them with a Bulldog, which some people do.

There is nothing like being left alone again, to walk peacefully with oneself in the woods.
To boil one's coffee and fill one's pipe, and to think idly and slowly as one does it.

I believe it is. My dog farts more than any 2 people I know. Loud too, sometimes it's just swoosh sound but other times it sounds as if he'd blow the seat of his pants out, if he was wearing any that is. It's funny because everytime he let's one loose, he gets up an walks across the room like he didn't do it.

Haha, what a bunch of comedians... Thanks for the laugh, pipeinhand.

All the same, the Rhodesian Ridgebacks seem like wonderful dogs but I have concerns about the climate. It looks like they could use warmer climes than I have to offer.

A friend has owned nothing but Airedales for years now. I find them to require a lot of exercise, are quite hyper and seem to suffer from skin issues. Plus, they are a lot bigger than they look.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are large as well, but fine family dogs. Another friend had one, in Maine; the dog spent much of the time outdoors and had no problem with that, as far as I could tell.

    Thanks roth.

I knew the Ridgies were large - that is not a problem - but I will have to do more research about how they cope with cold weather.

The one dog that is proven to thrive in this climate - the Newfoundland - is a gentle giant and I assume they are not much good for guard situations so I will have to stay on the lookout for suitable breeds.

I was told Ridgies were bred to hunt lions. I remember being impressed with the dog's speed, grace and strength.

I've heard that too. It is an impressive history, if that is the case...

The African settlers needed strong and fast and loyal dogs so I am sure they are bred for a high level of performance, I just don't know if they fit my needs. I do like everything I've ever read about them, however, and I'm interested in knowing more.

I think we're headed towards a Dobie. I was really thinking of the German but from what I've now learned, the shedding will be a big problem.

I have a 170 pound English Mastiff and a 9 pound Boston Terrier. Guess which one makes the better watchdog? You got it. - the Boston. She barks like crazy when anyone comes aroud. But although the Mastiff looks really manacing and her sheer size is very intimidating, the truth Is that she is truly a gente giant. Both are great breeds.

My wife and I put quite a bit of planning into our dog. Our mutual friend has a Staffordshire pitbull terrier named buddy he has a concrete block for a head and weighs around a 120lbs. Buddy has a heart of gold, great with kids and is an excellent guard dog. When we decided to get a dog we knew we had a have a pup from him. After some time of wondering where to find female to mother our future pup we ran into anther friend at the bar who mentioned he had an American pit in heat at the time, a few more beers and a phone call later we had everything cleared with Buddy's owner and several people from the bar over to the house for more beers and the conception of our future puppy. Long story short his name is Spooky he has tuxedo markings a deep superman blue/black coat white gloves ect. He is absolutely the best dog either of us have ever had. Spooky is just over a year old knows several tricks was easily house broken and is the most loving dog I've ever seen with us and our children. Oddly enough it doesn't seem that spooky is going to get as big as the mom or the dad he has topped out around 50lbs. I was worried he wouldn't be much of a guard dog but i was terribly mistaken he hates pedestrians, horses, and any sounds that go bump in the night lol. He lets us all know if there is anything around that shouldn't be there and i do feel sorry for the home invader that encounters him he may be small but he has one hell of a set of teeth and is extremely strong for his size. And if for some reason they get past Spook I've always got my Bond Arms 410 over under shotgun pistol
