Watched Legends of The Fall yesterday, getting ready to watch Dances With Wolves, and Quiggly Down Under might be next.
Any other suggestions?

I have had that bug since I was 12yrs old mate. I have almost every Western movie made and also over 500 Western Novels.
We watched both young guns earlier today
The unforgiven, 3:10 to Yuma, True Grit, (John Wayne not the new one), Hang 'em High. There is a few to keep ya going.
The Outlaw Josey Wales
The Sacketts, The Undefeated, 100 Rifles, The Sons of Katie Elder, Eldorado, Hang Em High, The Texican, How The West Was Won, Geronimo, Chato's Land, The Alamo, etc. I could go on for days and days mate
Wow. Thank you everyone. I think next I'll try finding True Grit. I say "try", because video stores are a rare commodity these days.
Lonestar state of mind.
Not a traditional western but captures the rule west pretty well with a wild ride story line.
Give Open Range and Tombstone a try.
I did a Marion Robert Morrison marathon yesterday.
Eldorado "I'm lookin' at a tin star with a drunk pinned on it."
Rio Bravo "I forgot the words, but ya better say I do. (I do.) Now yur Deputies."
Big Jake "I thought you were dead."
McLintock "Curly! Don't say it's a good morning, or I'll shoot ya."
and,
The War Wagon "Mine hit the ground first." "Mine was taller."
McClintock is one of my all time favorites. You might also like The Cowboys and Silverado.
Today was such a nice day that I was able to ride each of my horses. I might be a bit sore tomorrow because I spent more than 4 hours in the saddle!
Jeremiah Johnson (about as good as the genre gets, imo)
Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid (true classic and one of the all-time best, imo)
High Plains Drifter (probably Eastwood's best western, and one of his best movies period)
and of course the "Man with No Name" trilogy, but that goes w/o saying...mandatory viewing.
And +1 on the following (in no particular order):
Young Guns I and II (both very good...II even better than I, imo)
Unforgiven (of course...really in a class by itself)
True Grit (both old & new version)
Hang 'em High, The Outlaw Josey Wales, and all other Eastwood westerns
Open Range
Tombstone
So many good ones here! Love the genre! But Kurt Russell in Tombstone popped in my head 1st! Fairly accurate film according to the History Channel. The scene where he stand in the river shouting NO! over and over! Awesome and to think it was true. Wow.
Question: Does anyone know what actor played in a depiction of the Gunfight at the OK Corral... once in a motion picture, and once in a television series?
Hint: He was on both sides. He played an Earp in the movie, and one of the McLaury gang in the TV series.
Here are a few of my favorites - that haven't been mentioned yet:
The Wild Bunch
Ride the High Country
Lonely Are the Brave
The Professionals - Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster and Jack Palance starred in this one and it just doesn't get any better.
Bite the Bullet
and, finally, the greatest American Western ever made, John Ford's The Searchers. (It's as perfect as The Godfather - both I and II, Casablanca, Gone With the Wind and To Kill a Mockingbird & I might even add Saving Private Ryan.)
When I say it's western day around here everybody starts whining and crying. lol
I read somewhere that a western novel is the male equivalent to the harolquin romance novel. Obviously, if the hero saves the girl, stops the bad guy, rounds up the strays, and fixes the fence, the girl will fall for him and cook his favorite meals. Women dream that if she loses weight, fixes her hair, says the right thing, the man will fall for her. Real life if much more challenging and rewarding.
I enjoy John Wayne and Louis L'amore. One of my favorite Star Trek episodes is A Fistful of Data, where Warf gets stuck in the holodeck in a western theme.
Winton
skip dances with wolves.... costner is to impressed with his own cleverness in that one.
Hondo
Big Jake
Unforgiven
the original Stagecoach
Red River
and all the spaghetti westerns
shit, don't forget The Magnificent 7
I think next I'll try finding True Grit
It's on Netflix
Just ordered The Man with No Name Trilogy on blu ray
There are tons of full length western movies on youtube as well. Quality varies, but you can't beat the price! Just search 'western movie'. If you've got a tv, blu ray player or computer hooked to your TV, you're set.
We're supposed to FINALLY have some warmer weather around here this coming week, so I'm going to put a few rides on my colt. Maybe I'll film it and make my own western... I'm thinking he's got a little buck in him somewheres...
You get any riding in over the holidays, Chris?
Gnatjulio - can't beat that for $19.99!
@hunter not enough...going out today tho
2 others that are important to mention, imo:
The Shootist (John Wayne's last movie, and a great one. Co-stars Jimmy Stewart, Lauren Bacall).
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Not to be missed, imo...great movie. Brad Pitt's performance is good, but it is Casey Affleck's portrayal of Robert Ford that is truly memorable...and a bit creepy).
And just a note regarding The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: IMO, the extended version released in more recent years is inferior to the original. The scenes that were deleted from the theatrical version were better left out.
3:10 to Yuma, Streets of Laredo, Tombstone, The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, Pale Rider.
No guesses? C'mon... this question was easy....
Here's a couple that I'm probably going to watch this evening....
They Call Me Trinity
and
Trinity is Still My Name
I love Tombstone.
"...you called down the thunder, well now you've got it! You see that? It says "United States Marshall."
"The Cowboys are finished, you understand? I see a red sash, I kill the man wearing it!"
My favorite western is Once Upon A Time In The West. Just simply a perfect movie, Bronson, Fonda, Robards and Cardinale. Directed by Leone with a soundtrack from Morricone. Perfect!
Just can't beat the Searchers or the Shootist. Open Range and the entire Deadwood series. These never get tired no matter how many times I've seen em. Just to mix it up a bit, don't forget Blazing Saddles either.
"Oh, don't do that; if you shoot him, you'll only make him angry."
Tombstone and The Outlaw Jose Whales
So many suggestions, thanks everyone!
My favorites:
Outlaw Josey Wales
Unforgiven
Tombstone
The good, the bad, and the ugly
I give up Lawrence!
Has anyone seen an 80's (I think?) western tv series called The Adventures of Brisco Country Jr? It isn't remotely serious, but decently entertaining. And the first episode has an awesome pipe smoking scene!
Silverado!!!!
@hunter, was that the one with Bruce Campbell?
gnatjulio - Yep, that's the one. Kind of hokey, but fun. Pic from the first episode below. Just finished Gods Guns with Lee Van Cleef. Jack Palance was the 'bad guy'.
How about the Mountain Men, or the Ruster Cogburn movies
Open Range is one of the best. Never was a Costner fan till I saw that. Already told the wife if we have another son he's gonna get Bluebonnet as a middle name. Mordecai Bluebonnet. Mordecai's from "Ride the River" for you Sackett fans. Hahaha, we'll see how that works out!
Shootist
Clint Eastwood days.. all the spaghetti westerns plus Unforgiven.
John Wayne days.. The Searchers, True Grit, Stagecoach, Red River, Rio Bravo, Big Jake, McLintock!
Odds and Ends days.. The Wild Bunch, Blazing Saddles, Cat Ballou, Shane, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Magnificent Seven,
at least once every winter a Lonesome Dove weekend.
"The Proposition" with Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Emily Watson, and others you'll recognize. John Hurt makes a kick-ass appearance as the philosopher/bounty hunter Jellon Lamb. It's a little slow at times, but very cerebral Western set in Australia.
Many great westerns have already been mention and several have listed Tombstone, Val Kilmer was amazing as Doc Holliday. Anything with John Wayne would be on my list as well as Lonesome Dove and Open Range. Now I'm not sure this is a true western because of the time period but "Last of the Mohicans" IMO is pretty special as well.
I'm going to make an educated guess to Lawrence's trivia question. Not sure because I was a little kid ...DeForest Kelley?
Shot! Score! ![]()
Way to go Steve!
+1 on all of the previous recommendations.
Also:
Monte Walsh (Tom Selleck)
Tall in the Saddle (for all of you Duke-a-philes- a great old movie)
Huge John Wayne fan. For comedy kinda western North to Alaska is good. Also one of his older movies Angel and the bad man. Also non western John Wayne that gets overlooked is Hitari. Rounding up animals for a zoo.
Thanks again everyone! So many reccomendations, I doubt I'll have any trouble finding something good.
Shane
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
The Searchers
Tall in the Saddle (for all of you Duke-a-philes- a great old movie)
Who shot liberty valance?
Big jake +1
Chisom
True grit+1
Lonesome Dove
Rooster cogburn..
"Sheep herder, oooh thats what that smell is"
I took my wife to see Django Unchained today. It was awesome!
Shakiest gun in the west!!
