I had to see my Doctor today, he took over from my long term Doctor who left (family reasons all most over night) suddenly.

I am on long term medication so have to have an annual blood test, so wanted to make sure when I have it done with the nurse the same arrangement would take place and the new Doctor would contact me if any issues.

During the consultation he said, "do you smoke" yes a pipe I said. "Do you realise smoking is probably the worse thing you can do for your health" and a few other things which flew over my head, bypassing my ears. In a very aggressive manner.

I have terminal cancer! So just how bad smoking my pipe can be for my health. I said in return.
This was from a Doctor who was somewhere between 2 to 3 stone overweight! And half my age. Felt like saying your high cards for a heart attack! But decided I had made my point.
He mellowed somewhat after that, not mentioning the smoking anymore.
Boy don't they like to lecture!!
Sounded like when the steam train was first seen going very fast the uneducated said "it will turn the sheep black.

Then smoking is after all "the new black"

I throw it back in their face very quickly if they are overweight . Getting old has its advantages when trying to talk to a young ,snot-nosed, know-it-all doctor.

My doctors have always just said "let us know if you ever want help quitting." They're all military docs though, so they usually don't linger too much on the smoking point. It's pretty rampant amongst vets and if they hung on the smoking too much they'd probably not get much else done.

At least he can say he tried. I like a doctor that tries to correct my poorly thought out choices. Especially if he/she is sincere. And, I really like Tom's doctors approach. My dentist does the same. He knows I know, I know he knows and I really do appreciate his efforts. One day he might strike a cord and I'll change for the better.
Comparing your unhealthy choices to the doctor's is, well... odd. I fail to see what one has to do with the other. Sounds like a cop out. Don't get me wrong, I've done the same but, I never resent a health care specialist trying to improve my life. And, I realize some have made bad choices also. I can forget it when I walk out his door. The poor doc will have to deal with similar cases all day, every day throughout his career.

I agree with Warren. It's sort of their professional obligation, right?
And that fat doctor probably has a doctor telling him how fat he is.

Warren- good point, you are correct, it's just another one of those "ineffective thinking and poor judgement " moments I suffer from. I do tell my doctors that I have no interest in feeling poorly as I do now for another 30 years. I would rather feel good for just another 4-5 years. After spending time visiting Nursing Homes, I have no desire to see how long I can milk out life to the very last second as society seems to be obsessed with.

Told my doctor I smoked a pipe and he lost it. Calmed down after we got it communicated it was tobacco. Seriously.

The terminal cancer part probably makes this an apples/oranges kinda thing.
I'm sorry to hear of that Oldmansmoking, I have heard the same from friends in the same position. When I was asked about smoking my doctor said pipes don't count.

Big mistake! You are now on the books as a smoker and will pay the smokers rates.

I'm not addicted to nicotine and I don't want to be lumped in with a two pack a day smoker so I wear freshly laundered clothes and look them straight in the eye and tell them I'm not a tobacco user. 8O

dave: Why in the world would you state such on a public forum where you are so easy to trace! It's like the members who readily admit to owning a small arsenal. Some things are better kept unpublished. I bet there are at least four words in that last sentence that will ring the bells on computers which monitor the net. sorting through keywords.

It's not the doctors so much, as the insurance companies I'd be wary of.

I wouldn't be able to afford insurance as a smoker or a non-smoker, so it doesn't matter to me. Thank goodness for my VA benefits.

My Dr asked if I smoke and I told him I smoke a pipe and the occasional cigar. He says that's not smoking that's enjoying yourself.
Now he doesn't bother asking anymore.

When I was asked about smoking my doctor said pipes don't count.
Don't inhale, stay generally healthy, and you should be OK, is the word I get.
The people I worry about are the ones who are obese, inactive, eat garbage food and also smoke cigarettes. Take away any one of the first three and they might have a fighting chance...
