I've decided to do a little experiment. That is to compare the legendary London factory brands and see which one/ones smokes the best for me. I'll do this test with the same tobaccos (one VA, one VA/Per, one English, Carter Hall and Semois), using tobaccos I know well and cleaning the pipe between each smoke for the most neutral flavor experience. Did I leave out any London factory that need to be included?
I have the following pipes to test this:
1-1960s Dunhill Bruyere

1-Lane Era Charatan's Make Perfection

1-Royal Comoy's

1-Sasieni four-dot Natural

1-Haymarket-era Loewe

1-Barling's Make

1-GBD Fantasy

1-BBB Own Make
This won't be the best test as I'm not the most experienced, but I think it will be fun.

Hmmm... depends on how exhaustive you want to be Stig. You could consider adding an Orlik pipe.
I love the idea, and can't wait to hear how the experiment goes.
How similar are the shapes of the pipes you'll be using?

A few more, maybe too obscure now but all large producers back in the day: Civic, Delacour, Hardcastle, Oppenheimer, H. Perkins, Ben Wade

Hard to find a Leeds-era Ben Wade, most of 'em are either Danish or Charatan produced.
Too many variables involved to come to any concrete determination, a wider sampling group of pipes would be necessary, but it's still a fun idea.
I've had 4 BBB 50's era Thorneycrofts, only one has been a true "good smoker".
Another interesting trial would be halo brand vs. 2nds
Could it be that a lowly Old England smokes better than a fish-script Sasieni 8 dot?

Easily possible.
Or testing by era, it'd be fun to have examples of the same Dunhill shape, say a 60, one from every 5 years from the 20's on up to now, and see what kind of results that'd produce.
I don't think the mystical mysteries of pipedom shall ever be concretely defined.

The shapes are 2 straight rhodesians, 2 bent billiards (might do the straight bulldogs instead), 2 straight Dublins, and 2 straight billiards. The chamber sizes and geometry, with the exception of the Dublins, are fairly similar but the wall thickness is different.
I could add in Parker Civic and Hardcastle (Ben Wade would be the same as Charatan unless you're talking Leeds-era) but I might leave those for round 2. The rest...hoo-boy I guess I didn't think this through thoroughly without putting on some limits of age or popularity.

I think you have a good stable of London-made pipes, and I'm glad someone spoke up for Parker, since

I have great affection for my little Parker Cherrywood. I don't think you need any more brands. These

will suffice, but I will put in a good word for Britannia, which makes a great little pipe for a reasonable price.

I have a 1/4 bent smooth Dublin with a fine thick-walled bowl that is light as a feather.

The big list I found this reading about Weingott pipes . I wonder if anybody has one of each .Mind you the list is for London only in 1899 to 1915 .

Igloo... 8O  That'll take a while to get that collection put together.
Good call rigmedic. I don't have one but I'll add it to the list of pipes for the next round...unless one comes up for the right price soon.

I don't think that J & Co were actually manufacturers as I have an 1896 (or was it 97...) Barling with their name on it.

A lot of repetition in there with all those Weingotts scurrying around.
Salmon & Gluckstein was an enormous chain of tobacconists, claiming to be the largest in the world when they were either bought by, or merged with, Imperial Tobacco in 1902. They weren't pipe makers. They made cigars and manufactured blends of tobacco.
It's a very cool list, but these are not all pipe makers.
