I am somewhat disappointed in this pipe. It was advertised as a Royal Irish System pipe that retailed for $160.

It is, in fact, a standard XL90 that was stained green over a light black stain, giving an emerald color to it. The stem is drilled for a Dr. Grabow filter. There is no mention of Royal Irish in the stampings. I suppose I could raise cane and get my money back but the damned thing is going to be a fantastic smoker. I cleaned and sanitized it, buffed it out and loaded it with FVF. The draw is as open as any fishtailed pipe I own and it didn't get warm even though I tried to get it hot. The rim is perfect and the pipe feels good in the hand.

Even though it isn't as advertised, I still feel I got a bargin and will keep it.

I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going insane.

It's uncool of someone to advertise something that it is not, but at least you still like it anyway. It looks pretty cool.

You just might want to be wary of dealing with that person again.

Remember what President Bush said; "There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — [pauses] - shame on you. Fool me — You can't get fooled again."

    Enjoy the pipe Chuck.

It's sucks that the seller lied about the pipe, but it is cool that it is still a pretty good pipe.

I hate sellers that lie. Is it really that hard to tell the truth?

I would be ticked off too, but at least you liked it and not hated the sight and smoke of it. You leave that jerk bad feed back?

I like it though its frustrating that its not in the shape they said it is. I'm in the same situation on a pipe I just won. This is their description:

    DUNHILL Group 6 Shell/Dublin
    Shape: #6105
    Date: obscured by band
    No damage.
Gold Band by Dunhill is embellishment.
    Dunhill "AD" stamp on band.
    Large Grp 6....
    Bowl 2.5", Length 6.5"
    No issues, besides needing cleaning...
    It is a beauty.....

Here is the question I ask and response:
Q: Hi, When you say the gold band is an embelishment, do you mean it is an aftermarket band? Is the shank cracked?
    A: As stated " no issues' with pipe..."Its a beauty"...no damage embellishment = ornamentation

When I read that description, I think it needs a cleaning...which I take to mean it needs a buffing and needs to be reamed and refreshed. The pipe I got was filthy, has toothmarks all over the bit which no amount of buffing will take out, the bit is so brown that 30 minutes of buffing couldn't make it black. I spent an hour just cleaning the outside of the bowl tonight and I'm still not done. The airway was so constricted, I had to use 4 different hand drill bits just to open it to the proper size. This pipe doesn't need to be cleaned, it needs to be completely restored. That isn't how the ad reads to me, does it read that way to you? The caviet is the price was very low so even in the condition its in, its worth it to keep it. I haven't left feedback yet and not sure which I should leave. I don't understand why some people have such an issue with the truth.

I love eBay and buy almost everything but food their lol. That being said pipes and different items are tricky to buy. If there is a day or so left on the item on the list I will usually ask if they could send me a couple more detailed photos before I make a bid. If that is to big of an inconvenience I a lot of times won't bid on it; not all the time but a lot of times. The other thing I like to see are at least 3 to 4 picks of the pipe and one being a decent shot looking down the bowl to see if the rim is in bad shape and determine if the inside is in smoking condition. If its a product your not happy with what I do is wait for the seller to leave feedback on me then I leave feedback for them. A lot of times a seller will wait to see what you have to say first then make a judgment how "good" of a buyer you really are. Better to be safe and not leave feedback then for them to leave negative on you.

Hauntedmyst, not knowing the circumstances under which the seller came by an estate pipe, I ALWAYS completley refurb an estate pipe. Bleach the stem followed by 190 proof interior scrub. Ream the bowl to the wood, S/A the bowl and scrub the airway and mortice until they are clean. Buff and wax everything. When I'm done, the pipe is cleaner and fresher than when new.

As for feedback, I haven't left, nor do I intend to leave, any feedback. The seller and I have exchanged several messages and I have come to the conclusion he made an honest mistake. He looked on the web for similar pipes and took it from there. Not the smartest thing to do, I know.

After finishing that bowl of FVF in it yesterday, I must say this pipe has the potential to become not just my best smoking Peterson, but my best smoker. For the $58 I have invested in it, I feel I got a bargin.

You've had it a few days now, and had a chance to evaluate it properly.
    So Chuck, what's the verdict?
Is it a diamond in the rough?
Or, were you just trying to polish a t***?

I do the same with all estate pipes but to me there is a difference between a standard cleaning and refurbishing, generally its one of time. Since the add said "No issues...it is a beauty." I expected less of a time investment and no teethmarks.

Ok Hauntedmyst, I understand. "No issues" means no tooth marks for me too.

Pstlpkr, maybe not a diamond but, given it's color, an emerald in the rough. It is comfortable in the hand and mouth and has a draw I wish all my Pete's had. I'm even beginning to like the color. Under incandesent light, it looks black, as shown in the photograph. In natural light, a deep dark emerald color shows.
I guess the only real issue I have with it is it was advertised as a Royal Irish, a high grade in Peterson's line up. I should have known something wasn't kosher because Royal Irish pipes have a silver collar on the stem as well as the shank.
Another point in it's favor is I only have $58 invested in it.

I was thinking we should start a black listed seller and buyer list. Something to help those who are buying and selling on ebay. Sometimes looking at the feedback is not enough to determine the quality of the seller or buyer. Let me know what you guys think.
