Those early birds are few 'n far to be found!
That quite a few of the pipes in this thread came from John Loring is simply inescapable, not only was he a sophisticated curator of a very fine collection, but he shared his knowledge openly with everyone and we are indebted to his mighty scholarship.

I'm less like a historian and more like an over-enthusiastic little kid, bouncing around all over the place and picking up postcards along the way. I never knew such a vast and fertile world existed and now it holds my endless fascination, it's been a little over 2 years now that I've been with pipe and I'm still excited about it all, literally learning something new every day!
These early Shells always command high prices, like this example:

...but the wonderful thing is how a nice Shell can pop out from someones attic and be had for a very fair price, like this one, it looks pretty early and it's got a great blast, and it's funny how the White Spot sometimes isn't understood by non-pipe folks, the Spot is upside down LOL, this pipe isn't mine sadly, I would have jumped outta my skin if I had saw it with that buy-it-now price!
